For one special day each year, Pioneer Park in Nevada City park is transformed into a magical wonderland. As part of the annual Nevada City Children’s Festival, the park comes alive with banners, strolling minstrels, jugglers, magicians, face painters, trolls, fortune tellers, dragons, knights, and more – all part of a Renaissance-style craft fair for children.
This year's Children's Festival will once again have two sessions, from 9am - 12 pm and from 5pm - 8pm. Admission to each session is $3. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
Craft tables for 20+ crafts are arranged so children can make their own Renaissance garb including costumes, swords, shields, magic wands, crowns , necklaces, rings. They can engage in wood block construction, soapstone carving, clay modeling and castle painting. The whimsical nature of the event, along with the wonderful variety of crafts has proven to entertain children from age 2 to 92.
The Rotary Club of Nevada City is the sponsor of this event and months in advance Rotarians volunteer to meet several times a month to prepare the various art and crafts, make costumes, and assemble decorations. Before and after the event Rotarians set up the park by hanging banners, moving tables, preparing tables and cleaning up after the event. During the event itself Rotarians staff several of the craft tables.
In 2014 nearly 2600 people attended the Children’s Festival with proceeds benefiting the park where the festival is held. This is a perfect event for youth of all ages and has been a tradition in our community since 1974.
