Rotary Gossip Corner

Any Rotary runners out there? Bonnie Murphey and Sandra Brown have formed a Rotary team for the Celebration of Life Triathlon. Sandra will swim and Bonnie will bike. The team needs a runner -- anyone? (Must be female or excellent female impersonator!) ...
Does Bob Buhlis have a secret gambling habit? He was too busy to attend last weekend's membership seminar in Grass Valley, but he was quick to ask if he could go the the Reno seminar on Aug. 6th. Fultzee is looking for volunteers to keep Bob from the tables...
Speaking of membership, pP John Burke is about ready to lose a prospective member to the 49ers. John, we need this guy on our tug-of-war team. John also missed an important membership seminar Saturday to drive to San Luis Obispo and back ... that 12 hour round trip will be $12 ... lucky Fultzee doesn't charge by the mile ...
And pDG Dave Denney informed our leader that he always misses one meeting each year, so that he doesn't have to worry about 100% attendance. If he makes up for his miss on the 7th, Fultzee may be out $100 ... if he doesn't, rumor has it that Dave will make up the diff ...
pP Ben Barretta and friends were recently in a golf tourney at the Nevada County Country Club. They placed sixth out of about 17 foursomes ...
How lucky is Eleanor Kenitzer? She's spending a week at a villa in Tuscany ...
Jack and Marty Dinwiddie will be spending most of September in Scotland, where Jack will look up some of the DINWIDDIE clan. In other Jack news, his recent pre-Summer Nights soire had guests recalling the "Israli Disco" incident due to the large number of people on Jack's deck ...

Club News

Tug O' War: The proverbial "gauntlet" has been thrown. The Grass Valley Club has personally challenged our club to a tug-of-war contest at their annual Community BBQ on July 29. We need a team of 10 people, including 3 women. If you're interested in helping us win, talk to newly appointed tug-of-war Captain Ed Townsend (aka the "Fittest NC Rotarian").
Fair Booth: The Nevada County Fair will be going from Aug 10 - 14, and of course, we'll be staffing our food booth again this year. pP Ben Barretta will be passing around the sign-up sheet for the fair booth shifts. Be sure to sign-up now, so you can get the shifts that will work for your busy schedules. Also, there will be a cleanup crew working on the booth on July 23 and 24. If you want to help, let Ben know.
Miners Foundry Window Project: On July 30 and Aug 6, a crew will be painting the new windows at the Miners Foundry. If you are able to paint from a ladder, then please sign-up on the sheet being passed around by Gary Gustafson at today's meeting. Speaking of the Miners Foundry, did everybody see the article about Ellen Davis in Tuesday's Union?
Paul Harris: Congratulations to Jim Young for obtaining his XXXth Paul Harris Fellow.
District Conference: Prez Fultzee and Ray James have set a goal of 30 members attending the District Conference on May 5 - 7, 2006 at John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks, NV. Be sure to make your calendars now!
Club Fines: Last week, Prez Fultz fined merely $47.00. Year-to-date: $182.
Weekly Attendance: Only five members need to make up by July 28 for our club to have a 100% day. They are: Pearce Boyer, Teresa Carrigan, Steve Fjeldsted, Eleanor Kenitzer, and George Rebane. Remember, attendance doesn't cost ... it pays! Every 100% day will add $100 to our fine coffers by Prez Fultzee and eliminate the need to fine you.

The Crown's Corner

Last weekend, I had the privilege of hearing Rosemary Barker Aragon, PDG of 5030 ( to the North of us) speak about Rotary membership. She was also a speaker at Chicago's Rotary Convention. Her message was simple. We need to make Rotary young again. The founders of Rotary were all young. Look at the ages of some of our Past International Presidents when they were inducted:

Rajendra Saboo (1991-92), age 25. Glen Kinross ( 1997-98), age 29.
Cliff Dochterman(1992-93), age 33. Frank Devlyn (2000-01), age 30.
Herb Brown (1995-96), age 22. Bhical Rattakul (2002-2003), age 31.
Luis Giay (1996-97), age 22. Johnathon Majiyagbe (2003-04), age 33.

Now our club is off to a good start. David "Kidd" Kenitzer was only 23 when he was inducted. His youthful energy on the Club Bulletin, the Radio Auction, and the Food Booth made him a logical candidate to serve as next year's President. When I was asked to join Rotary in 1964, it was known as the "old man's club" in Santa Cruz. As I have grown older, I have become comfortable with being surrounded by folks my own age. The people I propose for membership are my friends and most are of my generation.

This needs to change. Our focus this year is on youth. What better group to introduce to the concept of "Service Above Self"? Help me make Rotary young again. Let's all bring some young business and professional people in Nevada County to our meetings and expose them to the ideals of Rotary. They may catch the enthusiasm. It could be contagious!
