• The
horny toad (a.k.a. horned lizard) presented to moi at the pre-Fair dinner
was a sweet gesture. Thanks, Dave Denney!
• It was hard to
miss the Rotarians at the Fair... Eric Trygg zipping
around in his golf cart. And of course the fellowship of the beloved
Fair Booth....
• Pete
Brost and Larry Underwood wondering who the
"young dude" was working in the back - they were shocked it
was Teresa Carrigan's hubby!
• The following
is from guest gossiper Ben Barretta (cleaned up slightly
to make him look smarter!)
• We grossed a
few thousand less than last year because David ran
out of meat on the last day mid-afternoon, but we may have netted more
since the meat and the bread were so much cheaper this year. A final
report will follow. We overcompensated and put too much meat on the
buns, although the size and the portions made our sandwiches very popular.
We used Carolina Moon's authentic Carolina Red dressing
on the slaw Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was well received.
• Running out is
better than having too much left over. We gave the leftover buns, dressing,
and slaw to the Interfaith Food Ministry.
• Ben woke David
Kenitzer (aka Kidd) up on Sunday morning when he called him
about 9:30. Kim Stewart was
also late for her shift by three hours! These kids must have been out
partying until the wee hours.
• Mystery Solved!!!
The ongoing mystery of why the cole slaw gets wetter after it sits in
the bowl for a while was solved by Jo Ann Rebane, who
matter of factly tells all that the salt in the dressing pulls the liquid
out of the cabbage.
• Shirl
Mendonca juggeled two dates at the fair Thursday afternoon
and evening. Party On, Shirl!
• Saturday's dinner
and late shift worked their tails off shorthanded. Jack Dinwiddie
had to stay through the next shift and did not even have time to drink
the cheap wine that Barretta left for him. Ray James
did not even have time to go the the rest room and may have done some
permanent damage. Members of Penn Valley Rotary Club
worked a few shifts to see if they are interested in using our booth
and products during the Draft Horse Classic in September. They need
a fund raiser and it would be great if someone who we know used our
booth instead of strangers who trashed it — as in the past.
• Ben is open
to suggestions and comments that will make the Fair better next year.
Send him your thoughts. He is also looking for an operations manager
for next year and committee members. Let him know if you are interested.
It's hard work but a lot of fun, and the best part is that we get to
know each other better.
