My informants have told me that Queen Ellen was subjected
to the same insubordination that has become the standard during my reign.
Our vertically challenged member, Fred, made an unsuccessful attempt
at the bell ... and he wonders why I don't trust him to set at the front
table.
We had a great board meeting Monday (but even the board
members have become unruly this year), The directors made several important
decisions:
1. They voted to expand the Drew Reynolds Scholarship
program to allow worthy recipients to receive renewed scholarships each
year (for up to four years) in order to complete their college education.
This means that the total financial commitment could grow to $8,000
a year. Since some of these funds come from outside donations it was
agreed that we should establish a separate scholarship fund as a
501c3 corporation. While the current board can't obligate future boards,
it was agreed that this program is one of our most important efforts
to help the youth of our community. Scholarship Chair Ellen
Davis, together with Pete Brost, did a great
job in presenting this plan to your board.
2. The Board also voted to move our regular meeting
from Thursday, November 17th to the evening of Friday evening the 18th.
Community Service Director Gary Gustafson has
planned a blowout at the veterans building in Grass Valley. "Party
Hearty with Jimmy Accardi" will be a major fundraiser
for Sierra Services for the Blind and involves several
hardworking members in our club. Gary will ask each member to be responsable
for selling at least four $5 tickets to the bash.
3. The board also selected the "Rotarian
of the Month" for August. I will be awarding a $200 check
to The Rotary Foundation for this member today.
4. They also helped me select the "Quiet
Rotarian" to be honored next week by District
Governor Dave Bianchi. Tune in next week to see if the Rotarian
is really quiet or just asleep.
5. The board went along with my plan to support Rotary
International's float in this year's Rose Parade. The
contribution will come from my discretionary fund budget (you may recall
that PP Ray James squandered Ben Barretta's fund on
wine last year).
6. They also approved a new member for our club, whose
name will be circulated to the club after they meet with our membership
committee and agree to the time and financial requirements of Rotary.
A reminder, these meetings are open to all members
and serve as a makeup if you have missed a meeting. I provide cheap
wine and stale crackers for all comers.
PLEASE ... don't forget to pay your dues. Secretary
Kim Stewart doesn't want to give me a list ... yet!
AND ... make sure that your contributions to The Rotary
Foundation are in to Shirl Mendonca by the first week
of October. The Foundation Dinner is set for November 2nd and we want
to recognize all of our Paul Harris fellows, as well as members of the
Paul Harris Society at that meeting. I sent e-mails to many of you already
and will try to get out the balance next week.
