Many club members got emails from me yesterday, encouraging
them to add their financial support to The Rotary Foundation.
It is great that Scott Kellermann will be with us today,
so you can all see the dramatic difference your contributions help make
around the world. The Board voted to use $2,500 from the club budget
to match (or supplement) member contributions toward their Paul Harris.
These will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis at today's
meeting:
- In the first wave, newer members will be asked to begin their
journey toward a Paul Harris Fellowship by becoming sustaining members
with a minimum contribution of $50, up to $250 Max. They could get
half way to the $1,000 level for just $250!
- In the second wave, members who are already sustaining members
can get up to $250 by agreeing to complete their PH this
year. This applies to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. levels where the member
has already begun to work toward that next level.
- In the third and final wave, those Paul Harris members who do
not want to complete, but want to work toward toward their next
level can get up to $250 in matching funds toward their next PH.
In other actions, your directors approved Articles
of Incorporation for The Nevada City Rotary Club Foundation.
I drove the articles to the Secretary of State's office early Tuesday
morning, Once they were recorded, John Woodford got
our EIN number from the IRS (I spelled it Infernal Revenue Service
in my first draft). Early Tuesday afternoon, we opened a bank account
and are now ready to accept tax-deductible donations to our own 501(c)(3)
charitable corporation. The bulk of these funds will be allocated to
scholarships this year, but the foundation will be able to carry on
a wide range of charitable activities in the future. This speedy effort
will cost George Rebane $240 (It was worth the
drive, George!).
Directors also voted to schedule a Holiday
Party on either December st or 8th, depending on Tom
Coleman's schedul (Since Tom doesn't have email, it's hard
to communicate). Harvey Diemer is in-charge of
finding the date... and someone thought the Pokerettes
could do the planning. That's after they finish taking care of our club's
effort in the Rotary Katrina Project. As I have said
before, when I joined Rotary in 1964, we wrote a lot of checks, had
lunch, smoked and told jokes. The Women of Rotary have helped us all
bcome better Rotarians. I can't imagine our Rotary Club without these
hardworking Gals. And one of them was selected by your directors as
Rotarian of the Month and will receive $200 from our
fine budget toward her next Paul Harris. Indeed, the final selection
was a close choice between two female members. Remember, the directors
welcome suggestions for this honor. Sometimes our best workers are "below
the radar" putting in hours for Rotary that we don't always see.
His exalted Highness, Dr. Bwana Fultzee

•
What prominent Rotarian in our club is referred to as Uncle
Dickey by his family?...
•
On the same day Jeff Wenzel was named "The Quiet
Rotarian", his wife, Lynn, was named "Woman
of the Year" by the Northern Mines Business and Professional Women...
•
Which Rotary Club member went to Miners Foundry on Saturday night, thinking
they were at the Kellermann Safari Dinner? And ended
up crashing a wedding there instead?
•
From Pearce Boyer... One of the more interesting facts
that our International President mentioned in his speech at the Zone
Institute Dinner involved women in Rotary. Many areas around the world
are growing in membership, including India, Southeast Asia, Latin America,
Austrailia and many countries in Europe. Rotary membership is actually
declining in the United States. From a high a few years back of 420,000,
the U.S. total today is 390,000. Keeping in mind that women were invited
to join in 1989, the total loss in membership would have been 80,000
without them...
