The Crown's Corner

Today's program will be preceded by the public flogging of Pp. Larue "Larry" Undercoffer. As most alert adults are aware, Election Day will be November 8th this year. This is good news for the Kingdom, because we had already scheduled November 2nd for the Area Four Foundation Dinner. It would have been difficult to move the election. Rotary's "Funny Man" Al Frumkin will be the featured speaker in what promises to be an outstanding dinner.

  1. Thanks to the overwhelming support for the foundation fund drive last week, our club will have 18 members receiving Paul Harris recognition. Not only is this probably the highest percentage of any club in the District, our club may receive more awards than the other four clubs combined.
  2. The above mentioned serf, Undercoffer, is using his great influence with the Elks Club to make sure that both the food and service will be to the high standards worthy of members of the Royal Court.
  3. Your board of directors have agreed to dip into the Royal Treasury and subsidize the dinners for our members. At $25 a plate, including all tips, you and your significant one will have a great meal, plus an entertaining and inspiring floor show.
  4. By Royal Proclamation, there will be no head table. The VIP's will be seated at tables with the commoners, in order to pass their wisdom to the masses.
  5. Introductions will be few and brief. The purpose of the evening is to honor you, the Rotarians who make The Rotary Foundation programs possible.
  6. Yours truly is in-charge. We expect that these radical changes will result in a fast-paced and memorable evening for all who attend.

Today, we will hear a report from student leaders on last Tuesday's Rock Creek Barbecue. This is one of the most inspiring youth projects that our club sponsors every year. Not only do the handicapped children get a "special time" hiking in the woods and meeting Smokey Bear, but the members of the Leadership Classes are able to learn at a young age the rewards of "Service Above Self".

The Crown is lifted to Pete Brost, Bonnie Murphey, John Hensley and Sandra Brown for organizing this outing every year. We had a great turnout of helpers, including Ben Barretta, Pearce Boyer, Ron Knaus, Shirl Mendonca, Laurie Powell, and Kim & Colin Stewart. This is a project that every club member should attend at least once.

Gossip Corner

Ask Don Fultz why the tags on his li'l hot rod have expired. Good thing there are no cops in our club ...
Last week, the hard drive in Kidd Kenitzer's laptop kicked the bucket. Good thing he follows his own advice and backs everything up so dilligently. Wait, he forgot to do that again?! You'd think he would've learned that the last time -- less than 6 months ago!
There were 2 times The Union was supposed to print Ron Knaus' mug shot with stories and both times the copy desk forgot it. What's up with that?
Did you ask Eric Trygg about his chicken yet?
Pete Brost was puzzled why nobody has paid any fines for an immensely proud occassion of having their beautiful young daughter get engaged (as in marriage)?

Club News

Fund Raising: During last week's meeting, our club raised $10,152 for the Rotary Foundation and another $550 for Katrina Relief ... in 10 minutes. That's over $1,000 per minute!
New Honorary Member: Last week, Wally Krill was inducted as an honorary member for his many years of "Service Above Self" attitude and hard work in our community.
Rotarian of the Month : Congratulations to Gayle Denney for being selected as RoM for September.
Sierra Services for the Blind: This year's annual event is now called Party Hearty with Jimmy Accardi and will be held on Nov 18 at the Grass Valley Vets Building. All members will be required to sell four tickets to this event.
Rotary Youth Exchange: If you are interested in hosting a RYE student for three months next year, please talk to John Woodford or Nancy Kemp.
Weight Loss Challenge: Last week's winner in the contest was new member Brent Daggett, who shed 6.8 lbs, followed by Jim Phillips, Don Fultz and Randy Young. The standings to-date: Fultz = 8.0 , Daggett = 6.8, Phillips= 6.2, Young = 4.0. In a complex formula only understood by George Rebane, each week's loser contributes $10 per pound to the winners' Paul Harris accounts.
