This week, I am putting the final touches on the annual Rotary Insert in The Union. My job was to gather together all of the reports and pictures from the five Rotary clubs in our area and send them along to the newspaper. As I gathered the news, I began to realize how important our Rotary volunteers are to our community and the world community beyond our borders.

The more than 300 Rotarians and their families make up the largest local organization dedicated to "Service Above Self". Each of our clubs have several programs focused on youth. These ranged from recognition of "Student of the Month" to generous scholarships for students pursuing both academic and vocational Goals. Rotarians rolled up their sleeves and built storage buildings at local schools and shelters at schools in Mexico.

We have pictures of our members working side by side with young people to pack the donations sent to New Orleans. Matt Weaver of the South County Club has written a great article about that effort and the support Rotarians gathered from our community...

The tabloid will show pictures of Rotarians feeding the hungry, fixing the teeth, comforting the sick and bringing books to people that most of us will never meet. Our own Gayle Denney has written a great summary of the "On to Uganda" project, which sparked an outpouring of community support for Dr. Kellermann's clinic in Uganda.

Last week, I passed around the excellent submissions Cub Secretary Kim Stewart had prepared for the District's "Call for Recognition". That gave our club an overview of the many service projects that we have accomplished. This Annual Rotary Insert will give the community a glimpse of what all 300 plus Rotarians in Western Nevada County do each year.

If you haven't, let us know today if you plan attend the District Conference on May 5-7. The club is picking up the tab for registration and the Sunday activities, which will include awards to the outstanding clubs in the district. I expect our club will be among those so honored.

New Member Proposed: Joseph Tomkiewicz (Classification: Financial Planning) has been proposed as a new member to our club. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact John Burke or Prez Fultzee.
Message From DG Dave: During my visits, I talked about expanding our circle of Rotary friends. Possibly, the easiest way to do that is by participating in the District Conference. Just by hanging around the Club Displays, it is so easy to strike up a conversation with other Rotarians. We will be making it even easier by putting the displays in the House of Friendship. There will be places to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. While the annual Speech Contest has been generating large crowds each year to hear the outstanding young speakers in our district, the relatively new Music Contest has quickly generated its own following. Arrive early at both contests to make sure you have a place to sit. If you were impressed with your local contest, multiply that by 11 areas who have all picked their best contestants. This is great opportunity to support our young people. The official luncheon kickoff will feature one of the most amazing speakers you will ever hear. Kim Peek, a mega savant, will astound you with his mastery of facts. You will also find that he has a great sense humor. Copies of the book, The Real Rain Man, will be on sale following the luncheon.
District Conference: The District Conference is coming! Our district's annual extravaganza will be held May 5-7 at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks, NV. A sign-up sheet will be passed around at today's meeting. Also if you're interested in volunteering to be a Sergeant-At-Arms, 2-1/2 hour slots are available throughout the weekend. Please let "Kidd" Kenitzer know!
Area Rotary Tab: The annual Rotary tab that promotes the five area clubs will be inserted in The Union on May 18. Ads are available to area Rotarians only and determine how many pages the tab will be. The deadline for ads is this Friday, April 21. For more info, please contact Jim Moss at The Union.
