I asked our esteemed editor, "Kidd" Kenitzer
to include a picture of the host at the "On to Uganda"
display we are preparing for the District Conference
next weekend. Both "The Kidd" and Ed Townsend
have pitched in to make a display that will make us proud. At the same
time, they are putting together an award-winning display of our club's
achievements this year. The best thing about both displays is that they
will very portable and can be used at many events in the future.
Speaking of the Conference, please get your reservations
in this week. It will keep things simple if everyone makes out their
own reservation, and the club will reimburse members for up to $85
which will cover the Sunday events.
And speaking of "On to Uganda", the "Back
to Uganda" effort is in full swing. If everything goes
as planned, the second container will leave Nevada City right after
today's meeting. I won't know until the last minute, but if it does,
I'd like to see a good sized contingent from our club at the Robinson
Timber Yard to see the thing loaded on the truck to begin its trip to
the other side of the world. The container is packed with equipment
and supplies to finish the new surgery center at the Bwindi
Health Centre.
An informal group from our club, including Stacy
Hart, Teresa Kerrigan, Jim Phillips
and myself helped gather the donations and pack the shipment. However,
I would be remiss, if I didn't acknowledge that most of the work was
done by one Rotarian: Harry Auld, a new member of the
49er Rotary Club. Harry went on both trips to Uganda last year and is
planning to go again this Fall. We also had some help from Chuck
Elizando from Grass Valley and "Rass"
Rasmussen from the Penn Valley Club. The container
will sail from Oakland on May 5th and reach Kenya on June 5th. That
will give it 60 days to go by truck to Kampala, clear customs and be
trucked to the Bwindi. If all goes according to plan, we will have the
equipment ready to install when we reach the clinic around August 9th.
I have room for a few more adventurers for this 16 day odyssey. Cost
should be a little less than $4,000 including airfare, food, sleeping
in a hut and tracking the gorillas. Ask Dave and Gayle Denney
or Jim Phillips about the trip. It will change your
life, and how you feel about Rotary.
Join us at the Conference.
