The Kidd's Comments

Please note that this week's meeting has moved! Rather than meeting at the National Hotel at 12:15pm, NC Rotarians should work a shift in our Fair Booth at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Speaking of shifts, please take a look at the latest version of the Fair Booth Schedule (I will update this as changes are made). Overall, everyone has done a great job of stepping up to volunteer. However if you don't see your name on the list, it's not too late to sign-up. Please let me or Fair Booth Chair Ben Barretta know ASAP (you might avoid some future fines -- hint, hint).

Ben did a great job of answering questions at last week's Fair Booth Picnic. Since not everyone attended, I wanted to reiterate some of the bulletpoints...

  • Show up 15 minutes early to your shift for instructions and a smooth transition.
  • First shift (10am - 4pm) should make ice tea and lemonade. They should also cleanup surfaces and what-not from the previous night.
  • Last shift (6pm - close) must put money in the deposit bag for pickup by Burrows Security at 11pm each night. Absolutely NO money is to be left in the booth overnight. Treasurer Ellen Davis will restock the change the next morning.
  • Portions of meat should be an even ladle-full. Be careful not too over-do it, so that we have enough product to last until late Sunday night (remember, we ran out last year!).
  • If someone wants a small dollop of coleslaw on the side of their pulled pork sandwich, then give it to them. If they want more than that, then charge them $1.50 for the side order.
  • Ask workers for their assignment preferences. Cashiers must be adults who are good / quick at making change. Watch out for fast buck artists who try the old $100 bill shuffle.

At the next regular meeting (August 17), our program will be a "joke off" with Larry Undercoffer. Since he is The Original King of Comedy, I'm giving you plenty of notice to come up with your own jokes. And yes, if you're "comically challenged" (Eric!), you can simply read the jokes. But please keep them clean, since there will be a couple of students coming to accept their scholarships!

Club News
Fair Booth: If you didn't read The Kidd's Korner and you've been missing a lot of meetings, you'll be surprised to know that we'll be working the BBQ Sandwich Booth at the Nevada County Fair from Wednesday until Sunday (August 9 - 13). Every NC Rotarian is encouraged to participate in the club's first fundraiser of the Rotary year. Be sure to look at the latest version of the Fair Booth Schedule (this will be updated as changes are made).
New Members Proposed: Jeff Pylman has been proposed as a new member by Paul Boch. If approved, Jeff's classification will be County Agriculture. Cheryl Benso has been proposed as a new member by Laurie Powell. If approved, Cheryl's classification will be Banking. Please contact Membership Chair Dave Denney or President Kidd with any questions regarding these candidates for membership.
Lester Williams Benefit
: On August 25, a fundraiser is being organized to benefit Lester Williams, a long-time merchant and resident of Nevada County. He is currently undergoing a life-saving bone marrow transplant at UC San Francisco. There will be a spaghetti dinner and silent auction with all of the proceeds going towards his high co-pay and living expenses during recovery in San Francisco. If you can donate any items for the silent auction, please let President Kidd know. Tickets to the event can be purchased from Larry Undercoffer.
