On Tuesday, I finally attended the Rock Creek BBQ
for the first time. What an amazing event...
The Rock Creek BBQ is a chance for the Club to partner with
the US Forest Service, Seven Hills
Middle School, and Champion Mine School.
At the Rock Creek Nature Trail just north of Nevada City, students
from the Seven Hills Leadership Class pair
up with a mentally and/or physically handicapped "buddy"
from Champion Mine. With guides from the Forest Service, they
explore the nature trail and begin to understand each other.
But the highlight of the event is a guest appearance by Smokey
Bear. The children's excitement can be seen, felt and
heard throughout the entire campsite. Once you attend this event,
you'll have a hard time not going year after year.
This sentiment could really be seen by the great turn-out by
NC Rotarians. I want to thank everyone that helped, including
John Hensley, Sandra Brown,
Ben & Gretchen Barretta, Pete Brost,
Terry Boyer, Ron & Nancy Knaus,
Bonnie Murphey, Eric
Trygg, and Cathy Wilcox-Barnes (and
I'm sure I am forgetting at least a few people).
On Sunday, my wife Erica and I were absolutely
floored by the "hoopla" that was our baby shower.
The potluck appetizers were a little too appetizing (I'm
still working off those few pieces of baklava). The table
decorations were hillarious (a 3-ft claw, latex gloves,
nose plugs, and a package of diapers was one centerpiece).
Sitting at the head table was quite uncomfortable (which
was completely intentional). And the climax of the event
was getting my beloved bell back! But in all
seriousness, Erica and I want to thank everyone from the bottom
of our hearts -- everyone's thoughtfulness was staggering...
