Last week’s meeting was definitely a
Focus on
Youth with two
scholarship recipients
(Ryan and Allan), two of the newly formed
Rotaract Club
members (Yolanda and Sol), our
RYLA (Rotary
Youth Leadership Award) candidate (Manami), and our
RYE
(Rotary Youth Exchange) student (Xavi). Our scholarship students
told of their future plans as did our Rotaractors; our RYLA
student came with pictures and a good glimpse at what happens
at the RYLA camp; our exchange student talked about some of
the best of his experiences.
Speaking of our exchange student, Xavi, when
he first arrived he stayed a few weeks with us and then moved
to Bob and Janis Aydelott’s home. When
I dropped him off at Bob’s, I gave him a big hug to which
there was little response on his part. Bob and Janis (the Aydelotts
are a hugging family) reported that Xavi told them that his
family in Spain was not a hugging family. When my husband and
I took him to the airport, all three of us were embraced in
a long hug that no one wanted to break. We were all a little
weepy and as Xavi took the escalator to his gate, my husband
wondered what Xavi’s family would think now that their
son had come back a hugger.
This week’s meeting has been moved to Treat Street
at the Fairgrounds, where we will have our Fair Booth
Picnic which starts at 6:00. It is
a pot-luck Fair food event. If your First Name begins
with an A-K, please bring a salad; if your
First Name begins with L-W, please bring a dessert.
Refreshments will be provided. It is a tradition in our club
to bring your place setting for the picnic and last week pP
/ Treasurer Ellen Davis gave us a glimpse of the sliding
scale of place settings that she has experienced at our picnic.
It is not mandatory, but table decorating with the Fair theme
Pirates of the Barnyard adds to the fun. Here are directions
to our booth: www.ncrotary.org/rotario/2007-08-02/FairBoothPicnic.pdf
The Fair Booth sign-up sheet has only a few
spaces left and Joe Tomkiewicz, co-Chair of
the event with pP Ben Barretta will be sending
it around one more time at the picnic. The Fair Booth (from
August 8th-August 12th) is one of our major fundraisers so if
you haven’t signed up yet, please get your name in a slot.
Joe will also be handing out Fair admission tickets at the picnic.
These tickets do not include parking so if you drive, bring
the $5 for parking.
See you at the picnic!
