Nancy's Nuggets

Our speaker at last week’s meeting was Organic Farmer Ray Diggins (isn’t that the best name for someone who farms?) who clarified what ‘organic’ really means as well as giving us useful information about where we can obtain organic products in our area. Ray was also the driving force behind the Thursday and Friday Night Markets, which made it very easy for us to shop locally and get to know the people who are growing our food.

This week’s program is the Program on Programs. WHAT?? A small group of Rotarians (Cathy Wilcox-Barnes, Mike Colantuono, Dixie Redfern, George Rebane and Gil Gray) have been weighing in on what types of programs our club should provide and has put together our program schedule thus far. The team decided it would be a good idea to hear from the club and to bring more of the program responsibility TO the club membership. So if you have ever wanted to wax poetic about the quintessential program, don’t miss our meeting on September 20th! We are looking forward to your ideas about the kinds of programs you would like.

Jock-ettes Crookston, Denney and Kemp represented our club at the 13th Annual Celebration of Life Triathlon by doing the Walk/Run. Laura and friends actually did run; Gayle and I speed walked (sort of). Our Assistant District Governor, Pamela Yazell also did the Walk/Run – and she too did run. George and Jo Ann Rebane (a past participant) also were in attendance. It was a beautiful sunny day for this great event.

Now is the time to bring forward your nominations for our Drew Reynolds Scholarship – the scholarship established by our club with the Reynolds Family in honor of Drew Reynolds. This $2,000 scholarship is targeted toward Sierra College students who are dedicated to an educational goal while working and supporting a family. Applicants may be single or married and living with his or her minor children and will reside in Nevada County and be enrolled in a minimum of two courses at any Sierra College Campus. Go online to ncrotary.org to obtain an application. Deadline is September 30, 2007.

November 8th – what is happening then? What is TRF? What is a Sustaining Member? What is a Paul Harris Fellow? What is a Paul Harris Society Member? I know you now know the answers to these questions and are making your contributions as you can. Thank you!!
