Thanks to Ron Knaus for bringing copies of
the Nevada City Nugget from 1935 which contained an article
about the chartering of the Nevada City Rotary Club –
the club back then met at 12:15 in the National Hotel!
We were officially charted on October 3rd, 1935 so recently
celebrated our 72nd anniversary. Red Burke
clarified at our last meeting that the real meeting actually
started at 11:30 in the BAR at the National – I wonder
if any fights ever broke out in meetings.
Wasn’t Holly Hermanson delightful? Our
new Superintendent of Schools gave us an overview of the Nevada
County School Districts, outlined her plans for the future and
identified several of her biggest challenges – one of
which is to get 100% of the students in our districts to score
as "competent" on the battery of standardized tests
that have been mandated as part of the No Child Left Behind
Act. While students in our districts scored higher than other
California districts, we are still in the 40 and 50 percentiles.
This week, our new Clerk-Recorder Greg Diaz
will let us know what he has in mind for his new office. And
be sure and mark your calendars for October 25th
(next week!) when our District Governor Vic Slaughter
will be attending our meeting. Everyone needs to be on their
best behavior and to remember Vic’s name when you meet
him.
There is still time to nominate this year's Quiet Rotarian
-- the award to be given while Governor Vic is visiting our
club. Past recipients of this award are: Ed Townsend,
Jeff Wenzel, Gary Gustafson,
John Woodford, Phil Ruble,
Kim Stewart and Bonnie Murphey
(Hawthorne now). I received a few nominations at our last meeting
but many of them were for Rotarians who have already received
the award, which goes to show that the Quiet Rotarians just
keep contributing.
This weekend is Rotaract Ball Night, where
our newly formed Rotaract Club will officially
accept their Charter. It’s Sunday, October 21st,
5:00 Cocktails at the Nevada City Elks Lodge. Our pP and Secretary
David has been key in the formation of this
club and has been spearheading the planning for the big event.
