My column this week is devoted to a remembrance of our good
friend and fellow Rotarian Jim Young, who passed
away on Thursday, January 31st.
Jim, a retired Attorney, was a long-time Rotarian – since
1961! He was first a member of the Grass
Valley Club and a Past President there.
He received his first Paul Harris in 1984,
belonged to the Paul Harris Society, and was
a Major Donor. Jim was a member of Twin Cities
Church and gave to the Kellermann Foundation to help the work
in Uganda.
Jim was not only a generous financial contributor to Rotary
but a great contributor to all our club activities. He gathered
donations for our Radio Auction, worked the
Fair Booth, attended the Party Hearty
Swing Dance and was one of the first Rotarians to volunteer
to help at the Wood Block table for the Children’s
Festival. Even though Jim had trouble getting around,
he helped the kids at the Festival select their wood and nails
and gave them little tips on what to build. He had a smile on
his face and told me later that this was exactly the kind of
activity that our club should do. Literacy was also near-and-dear
to Jim, who spent many days as a Literacy Tutor Volunteer
to young people and adults.
Jim was a stalwart at our weekly meeting; when I first met him
I thought he seemed a little stern and later realized that this
was just his cover-up for a wonderful, funny and kind personality.
He rarely let comments slip by and pointed out various presidential
‘failings’ in a very clever way. If a president
was giving a rather obtuse description of a Rotary program,
Jim always asked the clarifying question, even though he knew
more about Rotary than most, given his long years of service.
He always had a good joke to tell, delivering the punch line
with an impish smile on his face.
We will miss Jim, but will remember him fondly. Jim served quietly;
he was a “Rotarian’s Rotarian”.
