Nancy's Nuggets

Our Craft Talks last week from a few of our newest members were enlightening, as they always are. Mike Colantuono explained, among other things, that public lawyers "view themselves as non political, technical advisors to policy makers and generally don’t like to be lobbied as though they were politicians". Who knew?! Julie Miller, a key person at the Nevada City Winery, revealed that she doesn’t actually drink wine (beer instead). And Robin Milam explained that Google search criteria are an important consideration when she is designing a website for clients. Robin also told us that our own George Rebane holds several patents for search algorithms.

We’re lucky to have such an interesting and diverse group of Rotarians!

More news about members – Gil Gray is recovering from open heart surgery, and we all send our healing thoughts to him. Harvey Diemer has decided to take another six months leave of absence. JoAnne Conely is now pursuing her new career with full time classes at Sierra College, so she is leaving the club.

Wilf Wilkinson, the President of Rotary International, has engaged all District Governors to a book challenge at the Rotary International Convention to be held in Los Angeles, June 15-18. This effort, called Rotary’s Wide World of Books, aims to collect more than 250,000 books which will form a "mountain" in the atrium of the Los Angeles Convention Center. Wilf is aiming for a world record – an official from Guinness World Records will be on hand to verify the results.

Our District Governor, Vic Slaughter, has pledged to bring 5190 books and our club has pledged 100 books to help with the challenge. Please bring a gently used or new children’s book to our next meeting to help us with our goal.

And finally, keep those auction items coming! This is our biggest fund raiser, and we need everyone’s help in pushing our net auction proceeds above the $22,000 from last year.

2008 District Conference
: The District Conference is coming! The District Conference is the culmination of what the 53 Rotary clubs in our district accomplish. And this Rotary year, we will all come together on May 1-4, 2008 at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno to discuss, celebrate, and plan for the future! Registration and details about the Conference are already available on the District Website.
99th Annual Rotary International Convention: As RI President Wilf Wilkinson says, "a Rotary convention is an event like no other", and this year's RI Convention is only going to be 450 miles away at the Los Angeles Convention Center. June 15-18, 2008 is just around the corner, so please take a look at the Convention Brochure available on the RI Website: http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/c08_brochure.pdf.
