Nancy's Nuggets

The three contestants for our Speech Contest were interesting. One was the Bear River Interact Club President when she was a sophomore (she's a senior now), while another was an exchange student from Germany. Phil Ruble (our Speech contest Chair) was quite amazed that a student whose native language was German would enter a SPEECH contest. Thank you to Phil and our judges, timekeepers and score tabulators – we couldn’t do it without you!

We will be moving next week's meeting for the Area 4 Speech Contest on Tuesday, April 1st at the Miners Foundry. We will be passing around a signup sheet at today's meeting.

In April, our Group Study Exchange participants will be visiting our area from Brazil. Eleanor Kenitzer will be giving the Vocational Tour to one of the young adults who is interested in mining, and David will be giving the Vocational Tour to the individual who is a Systems Analyst. Thank you David and Eleanor for your continued above and beyond service to our club!

Our district is also sponsoring a team of young adults to go to Brazil, and while they are there, they may visit a school that has increased literacy there. In 2001, the Rotary Foundation awarded a 3-H Grant in Brazil to introduce a new reading and writing concept: CLE which stands for Concentrated Language Encounter. This is a method of education where students learn from group texts and activities rather than rote memorization and repetition. It is low cost and popular with students. Since the program started, over 1,900 teachers and educational experts have been trained in the method and over 72,600 beneficiaries have learned to read and write! This is just one small example of the work Rotary does to promote literacy. March is what Rotary Month?

Thanks for the great push in getting Radio Auction items submitted. As of Thursday morning, members have collected 122 items worth $60,764. We are finalizing the myriad of details for the DAY OF and will have a lot of fun on our big day: March 29th. And don’t forget books for the Rotaract Club and books for District Governor Vic's 5190 Pledge.
