Nancy's Nuggets

As you are all aware, the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar’s delta region continues to worsen after a powerful cyclone hit on May 3rd. However you may not be aware that a response team of four specially trained volunteers moved into devastated areas last week to distribute more than 800 ShelterBox containers. The team will work in cooperation with local groups in Myanmar to line up transportation and determine where the shelters will do the most good.

ShelterBox is a grassroots disaster relief organization supported by Rotary clubs around the world. Each ShelterBox container provides a tent, stove, water purification kit, blankets, tools and other necessities to help a family of 10 survive for six months. Since there is no Rotary presence in Myanmar, Rotarians’ direct involvement in the relief work will be limited. But the executive director of ShelterBox USA, Beth Palmer, has noticed a spike in contributions from Rotarians, as have ShelterBox offices in Australia, Canada and Germany. The founder of ShelterBox, a member of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, England, says that 224 containers left Dubai last week, 220 boxes have been sent from Melbourne, Australia and 200 are en route from Cornwall, England. ShelterBox was launched in 2000 and has raised $29 million to date. Each ShelterBox costs $1,000 to sponsor. Rotary is working to help in any way it can!

At today's meeting, we should get an update on last Friday's Party Hearty fundraiser. Although it's too soon to hear how much money was raised for Women of Worth, I hear that everything ran smoothly and was well attended. Thanks to those who gave up their Friday nights to volunteer!

Our President Elect Bob Buhlis will be giving us an interesting program at this week’s meeting. We’ll elect his Board of Directors and then get a glimpse our new Rotary International President DK Lee’s goals, as well as the goals of our own new District Governor Wyn Spiller. Both RI President DK and DG Wyn will be challenging the clubs to reach new heights next year. Bob will also ask for your input on what you’d like to see our club do in the coming year, so please come with your suggestions.
