Last week, we had the honor of visits from more of the young
men and women who came to receive their scholarship
checks. It is always a delight to meet these young people and
to hear about their plans for the school year and beyond. They
represent the future and, who knows, may one day be outstanding
Rotaractors and Rotarians as they go about applying their new
teachings and skills to make their dreams real and dreams real
for others.
I always enjoy craft talks as I know you do. John Hazelwood
and Austin Farrar gave us a little more insight
into who they are and their backgrounds. We’ll make it
a point to be more consistent in asking our new members to introduce
themselves in a timely fashion. It is important that each of
us make sure all new members and guests are felt welcome and
a part of the club – it's a major part of making sure
new members don't fall by the wayside, but become active and
productive Rotarians. At our luncheon meetings, we tend to sit
with the same members every week. This week, how about sharing
a table with a member who has joined the club within the last
couple of years, someone who you don’t know well?
A lot goes on beyond our club that doesn’t get reported,
so I want to share some projects and events that are coming
up. Our clubs in Area 4 (western Nevada County)
are working together to have an electronic equipment collection
day to raise funds for Polio Plus. One of RI
President D. K. Lee’s challenges is for each
club to raise $1,000 a year for three years to eradicate polio
in the remaining four countries. Our ADG Pam Yazell
suggested that this been done at the area level and we are doing
just that. More information will be provided as plans develop.
In the meantime, please save any electronic equipment that you
may be planning to discard. Soon we should have a storage unit
to hold equipment until collection day. More next week...
Two more members received their Pride in Rotary Lion
pins last week (Nicole Dillard and Julie
Miller). Whoops, I failed to give Carolyn Inglis
her pin, but will this week. I’m looking forward to the
report from our Secret Spies, so I can present even more pins,
as well as our program “Aviation in Nevada County”
to be presented by Gordon Mills hosted by George
Rebane.
