Happy Holidays - Merry Christmas 2020

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

From our house to yours, love and wishes for a joyous holiday week!

Happy Holidays to all!

We hope that all of you will find a special way to celebrate the season as this chaotic year of 2020 comes to a close.

As we reach the mid-point in the Rotary year and I contemplate the second half of my term as your club president, I am looking forward to our lives starting to return to a more normal course. We have faced and overcome some terrific challenges in the past six months. Thank you, Club members and good friends, for sharing this journey (JOurneY) together.

My greatest hope is that we all stay healthy and can resume our normal activities by the end of my term next June 30.

Our club has a great leadership team, and now we have even more wisdom and experience on the Board with the addition of PDG Doug McDonald as Director-at-Large. Since Doug and Karen joined our club last June, they have been very engaged in club activities, and now Doug has accepted my invitation to join the Board to share his years of experience and leadership in Rotary.

Thanks Doug,and welcome!

Ho! Ho! Ho! Santa came to celebrate with us for a fun filled Holiday Party!

Led by Rudolf, of course, and joined by DG Berta!

Dave and Janet Bunje joined from So Cal, Chris Geyer from Wyoming, and newly selected DGND (DG 2023-24) Stacy Graham, President Auburn Gold Country Rotary Club and AG Area 5.  We were decked out in our most glamorous, funniest, ugliest, best head gear, and most authentic Santa Holiday attire!

We were tickled by trivia stumps and scavenger hunts and who is Naughty and Nice. Do you know how many ghosts show up in A Christmas Carol?  Hint (not 3...) And who still has a flip phone?

with prizes galore!

Members corner

We were saddened by the passing of our long time Rotarian friend Allan Rogers on Monday,  December 21.  Allan served as our Club President in 1981-82 and was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. A talented vocalist, he loved music and sang in multiple choral groups including Grass Valley Male Voice Choir and of course, Nevada City Rotary Club! Owner of Rogers Picture Framing, in addition to music, his passion was art restoration, custom framing, fine art appraising and serving as an art consultant. Our sympathies to Betty, his wife of 60 years, and her loved ones.

Hungry Games

February is not the time for Hungry Games or hosting a live event of any size.  We have released our contracted date of February 14 and are working with Miners Foundry to reschedule at a COVID safe time.  We are also contacting the restaurants who generously donated $100 certificates for our raffle with the intention of determining which businesses are still willing and able to honor those certificates. Our intention is to create an opportunity to host the raffle in the next few months.

A BIG THANK YOU to Gretchen Bond and Miners Foundry for their flexibility in supporting our Club, our community, and their customers. The Foundry truly is one of the corner stones of our community. The deferrals of so many events including ours through the pandemic has had a direct impact on their cash flow.  To help offset the loss of revenues, Miners Foundry has a fundraising campaign to raise $75,000.  Learn more about their campaign at MinersFoundry.org.

Last Week:  2021 Wild & Scenic Film Festival: A Virtual Festival Experience

Festival Director Jess Swigonski walked us through the virtual site that will host the Wild & Scenic Film Festival.  Check it out for yourself and buy session tickets at https://wsff.eventive.org/

SYRCL’s (South Yuba River Citizens League) 19th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival will take place January 14-24, 2021 as an entirely virtual experience. Presented online, the festival will still bring together another incredible selection of films to change your world.

Treat Street T-Shirt Fundraiser - for Fair and Vendors

To show appreciation to you, the organizations of Treat Street, the Fairgrounds will be running a Treat Street t-shirt promotion during the next few weeks, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Treat Street organizations.

These cool “Treat Street fanatic” t-shirts are now on sale for $12 ($20 if shipping is requested) and with each shirt sold, $6 will go to the Treat Street nonprofit of the buyer’s choice, i.e could be Nevada City Rotary!, and $6 goes to the Fairgrounds.

Virtual International Project Fairs

Good news! We have the unique opportunity of participating in virtual Project Fairs in this Rotary year.  The fairs are on Zoom and open to all Rotarians, at no cost.  This arrangement is ideal for learning how project fairs work without leaving the comfort of your home and with no travel expenses.  So, take advantage!

Rotary Mid-Years Dues are Due

We are rapidly approaching mid-point in our Rotary year!  For those of you who chose to pay dues in two increments, your balance of $85.50 ($171 / 2) is due before January 1, 2021.  You should have an invoice from Treasurer Tom; please pay promptly.

Your Happy/Sad Shares make a difference!

Thank you Treasurer Tom Ryan for your ongoing diligence with our finances.  And thank you Club members for following the Four Way Test with your pledges to our Club!  If you have questions, Tom R is happy to discuss your statement with you.

Your Happy/Sad shares give us glimpses of what is going on in your life beyond Rotary.  They are special moments together especially since so much of our time is on Zoom.  Your associated "bucks" provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond.  Thanks for sharing you!

Stay connected and informed

Robin monitors our news@ncrotary.org email. You can direct questions to that email or to me.  As we learn more and to stay in touch, we will send out regular or more frequent Rotarios.
