Rotario - April 26, 2018

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

* * * THIS WEEK * * *

Lunch meeting at
Trolley Junction Restaurant at The Northern Queen
400 Railroad AvenueNevada City, CA 95959 Directions

This Week Lunch:  Tiffany Roberts, Doris Foley Research Library

I am writing this Rotario a week ahead since eleven of us will be in Los Barriles, Mexico when the next Rotario needs to be put together. I can't tell you how our trip went, since we haven't left yet (6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning we're heading to Sacramento International Airport), so obviously we haven't done any of the blood pressure or diabetes screening yet - BUT, I know it's going to be rewarding, fun and warmer than it has been here lately. Chris Geyer said it's 85 degrees and the water is 70 - a far cry from the snow that we've had recently! If all goes according to plan, at the Mixer on April 19th those of you in Nevada City, California were enjoying yourselves while those of us in Los Barriles were having pizza at Joe's Pizza.  I'm sure you all had a great time at the Mixer under Tom Ryan's mischievous watch and I'm sure we all will have a great time under Chris Geyer's mischievous watch!

Clinic prep planning and Joe's Pizza gathering with Los Barriles (Thank you Walt and Paul)

This week you'll need to treat our guest speaker extra nice because she's my boss. Well, no one really bosses me anymore since I'm retired but she's the person I report to on my days working at the Doris Foley Research Library. Tiffany Roberts is the Branch Librarian now that the County has taken the library over again and she will be not only giving us an update on how the transition is going but she has a surprise in store for us in her presentation. Make sure you come out for the meeting and invite a friend or two. Remember, not many people join Rotary from just dropping into a meeting; it's important to INVITE potential members to a meeting.

May 3 Social Mixer:  Tears and Laughter with Paul Harris Awards and PP Dave Bunje Farewell

The Mixer on May 3rd is going to be a bit of a mix of happy and sad. The happy part is the awarding of some first time Paul Harris pins. The sad part is we will also be having a going-away party for Past President (twice) David Bunje. He and Janet have been busying remodeling the house they bought down South and sorting and downsizing possessions from their house here, readying it for sale and putting up the SOLD sign!  It looks like the time is coming that they will be done with the crazy commute between places and saying goodbye to Nevada City. We want to send them off in style so make sure you save the date!

Rotarians at Work Day - Saturday April 28 - Tip Toe through Daffodils to Clean Up Penzance Park

Rotarians At Work Day happens the last Saturday in April each year. On that day, Clubs all around the world identify a hands-on project that all members can participate in to help their local community. Carolyn Inglis has been hard at work identifying a perfect project for us. Despite having a full plate with family deaths and medical emergencies, she has been in contact with the Mayor, the Fire Chief, the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, the City Manager and the Parks and Recreation Director looking at potential projects for the coming year as "Rotarians Making a Difference."

For this Saturday's Rotarians At Work Day we are going back to spruce up Penzance Park. Our daffodils are in full bloom and grasses are sprouting full force with them. Please mark Saturday on your calendar and plan to join us from 9am - noon  Bring weed wackers, rakes, gloves, tools, and water. It's a great day to bring family along so we get to know them better. Walt Stickel ordered shirts for our new Rotarians and everyone else should have theirs so make sure to wear them to help raise awareness of what Rotary is doing in our community.

Happening in May!

Also note, we are working with the Adaptive Education Teaching staff to plan another Field Day with the Seven Hills Middle School Leadership Class and adaptive education students similar to last year's event at Lion's Park.  This event continues our tradition with the schools that started years ago along Rock Creek.  We are looking at dates and locations for the last week of May.  Keep you calendar open for the mornings of May 29 and 31 until we settle on a date.

2018 Nevada County Fair Time August 8-12

We need your support and partnership serving at the Fair!

August 8 – 12, 2018

Join us at our Nevada City Rotary booth on Treat Street as we dish up Pulled Pork and Shredded Chicken sandwiches for our annual community service fundraiser.  We need to fill 100 openings to cover the 5 days of the Fair.  Nevada City Rotarians are expected to work at least 2 shifts during Fair Week -- in the spirit of sharing the load we encourage you to engage friends and colleagues to work with us.  Working with friends and family is fun and a great way to serve not just Rotary but our Community!  Click to the Latest Schedule icon to check for open shifts.

To schedule to work one or more shifts, send an email to (link sends e-mail) stating which shift you are available and willing to cover.  We ask you to be reponsible for finding a replacement in the event you can not make your shift.  THANK YOU for all you do in service for Rotary, our Club and our Community!

Treats and Hosts for Girls Who Code

The program will wind down in April.  A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL who have actively supported this year's Girls Who Code Program.  Special shout outs to Trisha Dellis who as Nevada City Superintendent of Schools is our program host and Leslie May, GWC facilitator extraordinaire!  A BIG THANK YOU to Nancy Kemp for coordinating Rotary hosts and treats throughout the year!  The year end finale will be May 22. The girls chose to extend the year through May so they can continue to learn new coding skills.

GWC club meets in the library at Seven Hills Middle School, starting at 3:30 pm on Tuesdays. When bringing snacks, please arrive by 4:15 for 4:30 serving. Snacks are served in the covered patio just outside the library, while the weather stays fair, and in the Teacher’s Lounge when the weather turns foul. Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Lane, opposite SPD Market off the far end of Brock Rd. From the main parking lot, go through the open hallway past the central office. The library and patio are just outside the hallway.
