Yea team!!! We did it again. Another Nevada County Fair and pulled pork extravaganza is in the books. With the help and efforts of many club members, volunteers from the area clubs and the Sierra Passport Club, friends and family we made it through 15 shifts over five days. We mastered our new point of sale credit card and cash system, survived the historic Friday night blackout with the help of the lights on our cell phones, sold a couple of thousand sandwiches and all the while managed to have Bushels of Fun.
While the efforts of all made our primary fundraiser possible and successful and were truly needed and very much appreciated we all need to stand, applaud and give thanks to the few who made it happen.
First and foremost is July’s Rotarian of the Month, Walt Stickel. Walt was the Rotarian of the Month because he spent a goodly portion of July organizing, calculating and ordering supplies and inventory. I thought that effort was above and beyond and then we got to August. Besides his countless phone calls and meetings with venders at our fair booth before the fair, once the fair began he was up every morning slightly before the crack of dawn to get to the booth and open it up, light the burners and start the water boiling so that everything would be ready when the first shift arrived at 10am. Fortunately Walt was seldom alone as wife Sandy accompanied him most of the time as well as serving multiple shifts and showing up from time to time throughout the fair just to see how things were going and lend a hand if needed. Walt has also returned to the booth every day since the fair to inventory and begin the closing down process of the booth. He is there now disposing of leftovers. All I can say is Thank you, thank you and thank you Walt and Sandy. And he has done this for the last three years.
Of course, there was the ever-present team Milam. Robin ordered and with Tom’s assistance mastered our new Square system of credit card reader and cash system and then wrote several volumes of instructions on its use along with guidelines for practices and procedures. Tom built a security box for the hardware and along with Robin provided the bulk of the booth maintenance like change faulty light switches, leaky water valves, installing required automatic door closers. Overall, Tom and Robin were also present every day during the fair as well as several days before and after the fair to meet vendors, clean and prep, do their multiple shifts and always be available to be of service.
And then there is the stalwart efforts of the dynamic C’s, Cathy and Carla, who also showed up every day to help out, serve, guide and assist throughout and are now busily categorizing the twenty two thousand plus dollars that were taken in and paying our supplier bills along with taxes and fees to come up with a final net profit.
We will probably need a few volunteers to do a final close down of the booth this weekend. The 2018 Nevada County Fair is headed for the history books. Once again thank you one and all for your help and support.
August is Membership Month so bring a friend along and give them a little exposure to our vitality and fellowship at this Thursday’s evening social meeting where we will have an incredible presentation on a Rotary project in Cambodia by David Emery on the Bareebo Project with Sustainable Cambodia (SC). David is the Cofounder and Acting International Director.
