Dear Rotarians and Friends,
THURSDAY August 22, 2019 12:15pm Lunch
Welcome District Governor Randy Van Tassell
Trolley Junction Restaurant at The Northern Queen
400 Railroad Avenue, Nevada City, CA 95959
Welcome DG Randy Van Tassell
This week we will have the pleasure of welcoming District 5190’s own Governor Randy Van Tassell to our club. This will be a time for Randy to introduce himself and for you to get to know him. He will give a short presentation but the focus of our meeting will be a question/answer session for members to really pick his brain and ask him all those questions you’ve been dying to ask about District 5190 and how it can work to help us, about RI and where our club fits in, or all the other little questions about Rotary that keep you awake at night like “how do I get on a tandem bike without falling off?”
Born in Boise, Idaho, Randy moved to California to pursue his career as a CPA and CFO. He purchased a small tax practice and moved with his wife Chris to Bishop in November of 1984. Randy and Chris have been married for 48 years and they have one son, Tanner, a sophomore at the College of Idaho.
Randy joined the Rotary Club of Bishop in 1987. He served the Club in a variety of positions serving as President at turn of the century (2000-2001). He became involved at the District level when District 5260 was dissolved and the two Bishop and two Mammoth Lakes Clubs became part of District 5190. He served as the first Assistant Governor for Area 13 and has served in a variety of District positions including chairing the District Audit Committee, Co-Chair of the District Conference, District Annual Fund Chair, and District Secretary.
As we all know by now, Randy has chosen a theme of us riding a tandem bike – someone (i.e. the Club) in front steering and someone (i.e. District) adding power from behind. I’m not sure if we’re a little behind or a peddle ahead but we’re moving on down the Rotary road and looking good! Please plan to attend the meeting this Thursday and bring your questions and a guest. What better time to introduce someone to Rotary than at a District Governor’s visit!
The Board will meet with DG Randy before the meeting (10:45 a.m.) to fill him in on our goals and the health of our club. It’s a time when we recognize our strengths and find resources to help us in areas that aren’t quite so strong. It’s going to be a great meeting so don’t miss it.
Schedule for DG Randy:
9:45am Executive Team (Cathy, Tom R, Carla, Robin)
10:45am Full Board
12:00pm Social time
12:15pm Club Meeting
August 29 - Fifth Thursday is DARK! No meeting!
After a lot of hard work for the Fair and being on our best behavior for the Governor’s visit you’ll have earned a week off from Rotary -– August 29th is a fifth Thursday so remember that means NO MEETING!
Avenues of Service - District 5190 Training September 28
On September 28, 2019 you will have another opportunity to learn about Rotary and where you might want to use your valuable talents. Our own Robin Milam has been busy with the District wide team planning for the annual Avenues of Service (AOS) seminars – A Day of Learning for all Rotary Members. Some fantastic sessions are planned with knowledgeable presenters. If I’m not mistaken both Robin and Pp and PAG Dennis Geare will lead sessions so you know they’ll be educational (and fun). We would like to have as many members as possible attend this year. The cost is $20.00 and includes a Continental breakfast and lunch AND the Club pays for it so the cost to you is zero! Cathy needs 2-3 more Sargent of Arms for the day so, if you are interested in helping, please let her know. See the Rotario for a link to registration.
Last Week: Tracy Pepper and Beth Volz, Community Beyond Violence
Outreach Director Tracy Pepper and Beth Volz gave an inspiring, moving presentation about the critical work of Community Beyond Violence in our community. The mission of the organization is to offer resources for building healthy relationships and to work with community partners to provide services for healing the effects of interpersonal violence. CBV is partnering with a number of organizations and public service agencies to prevent violence and protect those most vulnerable. Through their work, the organization is transforming lives and reshaping our community. Click on their logo to learn more about the wonderful work of Community Beyond Violence.
