Rotario - August 3, 2017

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Just added to our Make History Today ~ End Polio Once and For All! campaign supporting Cathy's Camino Santiago trek is a video of Caleb Dardick sharing stories of his Dad, Sam Dardick entitled In Honor of Sam Dardick Lessons from a Teenage Athlete with Polio.  Cathy is now into week two of her journey and has sent photos and messages from Camino.  Read her updates and more about Sam Dardick at https://givingtrail.org/campaigns/200110/make-history-today-end-polio-once-and-for-all/

This Week Social: "Sea You" at our Pre-Fair Picnic on Treat Street

Bring a salad, vegie or dessert to share.  Tom Coleman is again serving Pulled Pork.  BYOB your favorite beverages.

Prizes will be given for best table decorations and maybe even during our program!

Robin will have tickets for Fair volunteers to hand out at the picnic.  If you are not at the picnic please contact Robin for yours.

As is our tradition, we will meet in the picnic area immediately in front of our booth on Treat Street. The back Gate 5 should be open. Enter the Fairgrounds through Gate 4-5 Parking lot off McCourtney Road.

Saturday Work Party cleaned our Treat Street Booth

A big thank you to Ken Ching, Tom Ryan, Dave Bunje, Chris and Bill Newsom, Gayle Denney, Tom and Robin Milam.  What was a very dusty booth has been scrubbed.  Aprons and mits are freshly washed.

Now we need food and supplies to be delivered plus last minute sterilizing of pots and serving dishes and we are set to go!

Last Week: Our Own Child Actor John Hensley!

John with Jennifer Jones in Miss Dove

John Hensley was groomed for Rotary as a child actor. Thanks to Dave Bunje prepared a slide show that also included video clips of John starring in Good Morning Miss Dove we learned that Miss Dove really did help mould the kid from slums into "a citizen with a fine sense of ethics”.  In fact his character at a later age, returns to Miss Dove's hospital bed as a Rotarian whose Club offered to pay for her medical bills.

Cathy's continues her trek along the Camino Santiago in Spain

Cathy is dedicating her walk in honor of Sam Dardick. Read her message, see photos and view videos about Sam Dardick at

Make History Today ~ End Polio Once and For All! campaign tracking Cathy's progress along the trail.  We will be posting photos and updates of her progress as well as watching the contributions grow.

Read updates from Cathy on the Camino!

We are already at 73% of our initial goal for Rotary's End Polio Now! campaign ... let's blow the lid off this goal and make the SKY THE LIMIT!

Join Cathy by making a donation to EndPolio as she walks the Camino Santiago del Norte.

County Fair Update & Save the Dates:

Wed Aug 9 - Sun Aug 13  Sea You at the Fair!!!

Fri Sept 1 - Rotary at the River Cats

This year's Nevada County Fair which will be held August 9 through August 13. So naturally we continue to circulate the sign-up sheet for staffing all of the work shifts. We're hoping that each active member will help "Share the Load" and not only be able to staff at least two shifts per member, but also recruit friends and relatives for additional shifts. We need an evening shift captain for Wednesday and a morning captain for Friday. And we still have openings for Thursday night, Saturday and Sunday afternoon and Sunday night closing. See the last schedule at 2017 Fair Schedule. You can access, but not update the shift schedule at the Club web site. Please Email updates to Robin.

Rotary at The River Cats

Friday, September 1st. About $40.00 per person which includes bus trip to Raley Field with food and drinks on bus and ticket to game. We usually sit above 1st base (great seats located out of the sun!).

Leave K-Mart shopping center in GV at 5:00pm and return home at about 11:30pm. Great fun with other Rotarians. 115 of us went last year. Robin needs to know names and numbers by August 10. Each club to gather $$ and cut one check per club to Mark Fleming.
