Rotario - December 6, 2018

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Thursday December 6, 2018
Holiday Party at John and Carla Burke's Home

11600 Red Dog Road, Nevada City 95959

Area 4 Garden Project at North Star House ~ THIS SATURDAY December 8

We need your help!  Saturday December 8 at the North Star House is an Area wide workday.  We have 3 Club members signed up and need 2 - 3 more as each Club is asked to provide 5-6 volunteers for this weekend's effort.  We will begin at 8:30 A.M. and stay at it until around 12:30.  Coffee, donuts, OJ and water will be served as we begin trenching and laying out PVC pipe for the sprinkler system for the Rotary Garden at the North Star House. Our overall target is to be complete with walking paths, benches, fountains, period plants and trees appropriate to the original gardens by the end of February.

If you can join us in the inaugural kickoff to the project, please tell Tom or reply to this email.  It will be a fun morning with Rotarians from all our local Clubs. Bring a shovel!

THIS WEEK:  Holiday Party December 6 ~ John and Carla Burke's Home

Join us to celebrate each other and this season of joy!  A big Thank you to Carla, Judy and Cathy ~ They have a delicious dinner, lots of fun and good cheer planned for us!

Directions:  Take Boulder Street to Red Dog. Their home is 1.16 miles from the Broad and Boulder Street intersection.  Parking is available across the street about 1/2 block down the hill.

We will be raffling the contents of the Jackson Club Basket at our Holiday Party. Receive a raffle ticket for every $20 donated to Polio Plus between our Club meeting with DG Tina and the party.  Tickets will be distributed at the Party.  Winners select among the various contents of the basket.  The Jackson basket includes lots of wine, wine glasses, jewelry, chocolates, nuts and gift certificates for a one night at the National Hotel in Jackson, gift certificates for food and with merchants.

Spread the word! Help Sponsor Seven Hills Students at NatureBridge Science Camp

Nevada CIty Rotary is proud to be sponsoring students in their annual Seven Hills Nature Bridge Science Camp in January.  In addition to sponsoring 5 students, we have set up a Giving Trail Campaign so that others can also support the students as Nature Bridge Camp sponsors. Any amount of support is appreciated - just a few dollars or support one or more students at $440 per student. We are asking fellow Rotarians to spread the word by forwarding the separate related email with details of the Seven Hills Nature Bridge Science camp funding campaign.

Holiday Goodwill: Bellringing for Salvation Army ~ A Rotary Tradition

All of our two member teams for the eight one hour shifts for bell ringing at SPD on December 15 have been filled but if you still want to join in come on by any time and join in the ringing or drop a coin or two into the kettle.  Who knows, you might get a treat.

Our hearts go out to Paradise

As we celebrate we are also mindful of those who have faced tradegy of engulfing fires.  Among those who lost their homes are 70 (out of 80) fellow Rotarians in Paradise.  Probably the best and easiest way to donate to support the community of Paradise and our fellow Rotarians is through the D5190 Giving Trail set up by our District Governor Tina, with a goal of $100,000 to be distributed directly to local Rotary Clubs who will have the best hands on view to determine how funds can be put to the best and most effective use.  As of this writing we have raised over $51,000!  Make a tax-deductible donation using this link.

Support Paradise Fire Victims via Giving Trail

I thank you all in advance for however you choose to express your compassion in this effort of Rotarians helping Rotarians to rebuild a community.

Los Barriles, Baja Here We Come!

Nevada City Rotary is unfolding plans for our fourth trip to Los Barriles.  Again we will partner with our Los Barriles Twin Club on a very special project. Last year the team did diabetes and blood screening for students at East Cape Medical Clinic and a local school. Everyone was very moved by the experience with the children.

Project focus: This year's team is going to East Cape Community Vision Center in Los Barriles to assist in conducting secondary (follow-up) vision screening for children and adults. This will enable East Cape Community Vision Center's medical staff to prescribe and fabricate eye glasses with corrective lenses.

For fun: Work includes play too! Chris and Christine Geyer will again host a dinner for all participants; on Sunday go to the beach/swim, outings in off-road vehicles/ATV’s, local tourism, shopping, and getting to know your counterparts in the Los Barriles club

Dates: March 21 travel day, March 22-23 work days at the Vision Center, March 24 R & R day with explorations, shopping, the beach, etc.  Return home March 25 or 26 (return in time to participate in the Area music contest March 27).

Meeting:  We will get together to discuss travel logistics in January.

Girls Who Code at Seven Hills

Girls Who Code program continues into the new year. The girls love our healthy snacks.  Please signup with Nancy Kemp to serve as host and/or bring healthy snacks a week or more for Girls Who Code participants. If you haven’t done it before, Nancy has great instructions on what to serve.  It is another incredible opportunity to become involved and participate with the youth in our community.
