Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Thursday February 6, 2020 - 1st Thursday
5:30 Social with ACME Robotics
Next Week: Trolley Junction at Northern Queen Hotel
400 Railroad Avenue, Nevada City
Hola from Los Barriles.
We will probably be home by the time you read this (except for Juan Viejo who will stay down until Wednesday). We've had a great time reconnecting with members of the Los Barriles Rotary Club and other community members. Chris Geyer and the Rotary club here have been wonderful hosts, as always. We've seen some of the projects they have been doing and also some where we have helped with a monetary contribution and we held 4 health clinics. We'll take a moment at the next club meeting to fill you in. It's been rewarding, too short and eye-opening.
If haven't participated in a project down here I would urge you to go next year. If you have and missed this year hopefully you'll come back again. It is a wonderful way to see OUR CLUB dollars at work up close and personal. I guarantee you won't leave here without at least one (and probably many more) heart-warming or perspective-altering experience.
See you Thursday - your Los Barriles 2020 Volunteer Nevada City Rotary Club Team: Carolyn Feuille (International Service Chair and Project Coordinator), Lynda Guthrie, Juan Viejo (otherwise known as John Hensley) Paul and Sonja Boch, Paul's friend Mark and me, tus Presidenta Cathy.
$ Social Fee this week $
As President Cathy discussed last week, we are working with Trolley Junction on a new fee structure moving forward. In the spirit of keeping our Club costs down, the Board is looking at options and will be making immediate term decisions at our next Board meeting. In the meanwhile our cost to Trolley Junction for lunch has not changed. For the social, Trolley Junction's cost to us is $10/person plus a $45 per meeting setup/teardown fee. The setup cost is because the facility would not normally have staff on site Thursday evenings.
The Board has anticipated needing to increase the social fee to at least $10 for some time but did not want to act until we knew what Trolley Junction was going to request. For this week, we will charge $10/person and PE Tom and Robin will contribute the $45 setup fee. As you all know, when we transferred to Trolley Junction, Hamid generously agreed to maintain the same fees that Tom Coleman had charged. Tom simply opened his bar to us with current staff and provided simple appetizers. Additional expenses incurred by The National Hotel were covered by the drinks we purchased.
The Board will meet on February 17 to determine the ongoing fee for socials and related future actions. Your constructive thoughts and recommendations are welcome.
Back by popular demand! Our favorite advanced robotics team! We will get the latest updates from last week's NORCAL Tournament.

Bob and Peggy Wright, Treats Ice Cream - Business Persons of the Year
What a delicious Treat! Bob and Peggy Wright of Treats Ice Cream were honored as Business Persons of the Year by Nevada City Rotary and Nevada City Chamber! They bring such joy and delight to our community all because they wanted to share their love of ice cream! The award is presented annually at the Nevada City Chamber Installation Dinner. This year the event was last Saturday night at Miners Foundry. Robin presented the award while President Cathy was in Los Barriles.
Thank you for your nominations and to Nicole for her coordination with the Nevada City Chamber.
A glimpse at the Year Ahead
Our President Elect Tom Milam joined the incoming crop of 2020 - 2021 Club Presidents and DGE Roberta Pickett this weekend in Reno for District 5190’s PrePETS program. As part of the program, the Rotary International theme for 2020 - 2021 was revealed — Rotary Opens Opportunities.
On Friday Tom was trained in the important topic of Grants Management (Rotary International and District 5190 have lots of money available for Clubs to use for our good works, we have only to ask for funding). Saturday was a full day of learning about all the resources that are available from our District to presidents, their clubs, and the members of the clubs.
A very important part of the program was meeting and comparing notes with presidents elect from other clubs across District 5190.
