Rotario - July 11, 2019
Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Thursday, July 11, 2019 - Lunch 12:15pm
Welcome Area Presidents and Police Chef Chad Ellis
First Meeting of the New Year
Trolley Junction Restaurant at The Northern Queen
400 Railroad Avenue, Nevada City, CA 95959
Message from President Cathy
Thursday’s meeting will be my first official of this new Presidency. I know I’m the “recycled” President, but this time around won’t be just a repeat. Thanks to all of you, I had a fantastic Presidency in 2017-2018. We had a lot of fun and I learned a lot – both the things that worked and those that didn’t turn out exactly like I planned. I can’t promise you a smooth year with no hiccups. I can’t promise you a year of limitless funds to do all the great things we talked about at our Retreat. I can’t promise you won’t be “tested” again. What I can promise is that I will do my utmost best to make your valuable time that you give to our Rotary Club as fruitful and rewarding as possible. If you can dream it; if you are willing to step up and take on a project; if it isn’t illegal, immoral or fattening*, then I’ll support you 100% in getting it done. Several of you have asked if there will be trivia questions or other games and frivolity at our meetings. Hmmm… who knows. You’ll have to come to the meetings to find out. So, that being said, see you Thursday as we jump into Rotary Year 2019-2020!
* Editor's comment: For the record, CWB delectable cookies are never "fattening"!
Nevada City Police Chef Chad Ellis - This Thursday Lunch
Join us as we welcome Nevada City's new Police Chief Chad Ellis as our guest speaker. Chief Ellis has been a part of our community since high school. He graduated from Bear River High School and went on to attend Sierra College and Yuba College Police Basic Academy. After graduation he worked for Yuba County Sheriff’s Department. In February 2008 he joined Nevada City PD and was recognized as officer of the year in 2009. He served as the first Nevada City police detective in partnership with Grass Valley police department.
After three years as a detective, Ellis was promoted to sergeant and was tasked with the supervision of employees on patrol, computer systems management, scheduling and the agency’s training regimen. During that time, Ellis received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice management, attended Nevada County Community Leadership Institute and currently holds his POST basic, intermediate and advanced certificates. In 2015, Ellis was honored by the Nevada County Law Enforcement and Fire Protection Council, receiving the Public Safety Commitment Award. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2018.
Children's Festival - July 19
This year's Children’s Festival, which is scheduled for Friday, July 19, at Pioneer Park in Nevada City. Nevada City Rotary has been involved with planning and hosting crafts -- especially Nancy Kemp, Gayle Denney and Sandy Stickel for many years. The planning team is now in the process of organizing all the volunteers it takes to make the festival a reality!
The Festival has two sessions. The morning session runs from 9 a.m. to noon. We then take a break (during the heat of the day) and come back for an evening session from 5-8 p.m. We will have about 25 crafts tables at each session, and each table needs 3-5 volunteers to help the kids create their works of art. We also have a number of activities that are especially well suited for teens who want to volunteer (and we provide documentation of community service).
We need a couple more volunteers for the Solar Sunprint morning session 9am-noon. Please get in touch with Robin (as Sandy and Walt are traveling in July) and Gayle if you would like to work the Renaissance Rubbings craft tables.

Rotary Rafters Eliminating Polio Raft Trip - South Fork of the American River
Each year all four clubs in Auburn, CA ride the rapids to rid polio and this year we are asking Area 4 if they would like to join in. What better way to start a Rotary year that is all about connecting, then working with two area’s and multiple clubs, connecting members and their passion. Sunday August 11, 2019, cost is $125 per person with $50 of that going to you and your Rotary Clubs foundation. All food and drinks are provided for and the fun, well that is a given. For details on the day and contact for registration, visit Rotary Rafters.
Rotary Ramblers
Each Tuesday morning at 8:00am Cathy leads a group of Rotary Ramblers on easy hikes around our community. With increasing temperatures, the group is discussing moving the regular local Tuesday hike to a higher elevation and thereby longer time commitment. For summer only they will be planning a once-a-month day hike to trails around Grouse Ridge, Loch Leven Lakes, etc. The hikes will still be easy-to-moderate and we will make sure to set a pace that is comfortable for everyone. Please consider joining us on an outing on some of our beautiful, back country trails. It's a great opportunity for exercise and more importantly fun fellowship. A schedule of the upcoming summer hikes will be posted soon.
Destinations change each week so check with Cathy if you want to ramble along with the group for a future ramble.
