Rotario July 19, 2018

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Social Mixer 5:30pm - this Thursday July 19th

This Week John Christensen - Bringing back the Nevada County
Narrow Gauge Railroad (NCNGRR)

Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad was part of the rich history of our community. The narrow gauge line ran from Nevada City to Colfax via Grass Valley.  For nearly 75 years trains ferried passengers along with gold and other materials in and out of California's Northern Queen.

Director John Christensen will share highlights of the railroad history and how today a team of dedicated volunteers and rail enthusiasts keep that history alive at the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum and Interpretative Center. The museum has just opened for its 15th summer season.

The Museum exhibits a collection of railroad and aviation artifacts, photographs, and documents for visitors and historians alike. Exhibits include the NCNCRR Engine 5, rolling stock, an early steam automobile, and other examples of Nevada County’s transportation history.

Last Week's Club Assembly - Goals, Plans, and Objectives for the Year - President Tom Ryan

President Tom ready to work!We have a full year ahead of us with lots of opportunities for everyone’s help, participation and involvement.  Remember that there is no requirement or expectation for every member to participate in every project.  The important thing is that every member participates in a few projects.

With all that we have going on there is lots of room for all of our members be they new members, short term, long term or Rule of 85 members to make the time to support a project.  Whether it is sweat equity, check equity, sharing experience or expertize its our actions that keep the glow in our Rotary hearts alive and well.  It’s your involvement that inspires the rest of the Club to keep moving forward.

With all hands on deck we will share the load and make the world a better place.  And isn’t that why we are here.

Editor's note ... what better inspiration than our own President Tom setting the example prepping our Treat Street Fair Booth!  Our next big event after the Children's Festival is the 2018 Nevada County Fair!  And a BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM to him as well!!!!

2018 Nevada County Fair Booth Planning Every Week following Club Meetings

Big news for this year, we will be accepting credit and debit cards on our new iPad based touch-screen Square system.  The system has shipped for expected delivery by the end of the week. For the cashiers among us, the new system should be much easier to use and less susceptible to jams, etc.  Robin will setup the system and schedule trainings.

The fair booth committee will meet after every weekly meeting to discuss progress on the booth and it's procedures.  We are still looking for additional volunteers to participate in the fair booth clean up session that has been moved to Saturday, July 28 from 9 AM till noon. Please get in touch with Walt for more details.

We also need another shift captain for first half of Saturday and setup cooks for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Cllick Fair Booth Schedule to view current openings.

Join us August 8 – 12, 2018

We need your support and partnership serving at the Fair!

To schedule to work one or more shifts, send an email to stating which shift you are available and willing to cover.  We ask you to be reponsible for finding a replacement in the event you can not make your shift.  THANK YOU for all you do in service for Rotary, our Club and our Community!

Children's Festival

A big thank you to Nancy Kemp for her year round planning efforts and leadership for this very special Nevada City Renaissance Festival for so many years!  And to Sandy Stickel and Gayle Denney who are again hosting craft tables for the children.  Volunteering at the Children's Festival is always lots of fun because the children with their parents and grandparents have such a fabulous time.  Check with Sandy and Gayle to volunteer in supporting with nature sun prints or renaissance block prints.
