12:15pm Lunch - AbleCarts with Tyler and Kevin Szura

Trolley Junction at Northern Queen Hotel
400 Railroad Avenue, Nevada City

A message from outgoing President Tom ...

Congratulations to one and all for successfully demoting a Nevada City Rotary Club President for the eighty fourth time as we clear the decks in preparation to kick off our eighty fifth year.  As I was ushered out the door in the truly grand style that has become the tradition of our demotion parties I must pause and express my sincere gratitude to our three mavens of social magic: Carla, Judy and Cathy.  I know that they had lots of help in the way of set up and clean up, entertainment, skits, the assemblage of gifts and recognitions.  The basket of restaurant certificates, wine, truffles, movie tickets and a gift card for pampering were not only well conceived and much appreciated, the generosity and the spirit with which they were given was truly a humbling experience.  The not so traditional ceremonial gavel plaque - which is as unique as our Club - was created and crafted by Tom Milam and will be on display in my home for years to come.

If you missed the skit or want to revisit, click the image above!

As I was not allowed any interaction with this grand event I don’t really know exactly who did what but I do know that nothing gets done in our Club without 100% participation.  So, thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone for a fabulous demotion and a fabulous year.  You have all touched my heart and I look forward to working in the Rotary trenches with you for some time to come.

I acknowledged the gifts that our board members gave to us all, their time and their energy to light our path throughout the year, by giving them a world clock with a build in flashlight.  There was special thanks to Ken for his unwavering commitment to show up early and stay late to set up and break down all of our meeting necessities each week and to Nancy and Chris for the incredible speakers that they arrange for us week in and week out.  Sandy Stickel was awarded the “Rotarian at Heart” award for her continued support and positive contributions to our Club.  Robin was awarded the “Rotarian of the Year” because the reality is I don’t know if I would have made it through without her support, friendship and guidance.

There is just one more meeting to go and then its time to turn the keys to this bus over to President Cathy (gee, I like the sound of that).  It has been an honor and a privilege and one more time, thank you all so very, very much.

Last Week - President Tom Nailed It!!!!

What fun we had 'demoting" President Tom who truly nailed our year with us! Thanks to author Cathy our team of bricks, board, 2x4, nail, saw, and the hammer to construct the point of our successful year.

Lots of recognition and thank yous all around for Board and Committee Chairs and spouses too!

A big THANK YOU to Carla and John for hosting us and to Judy for coordinating details.  A special congratulations to Ron and Nancy Knaus who celebrated their 60th Anniversary with us at Tom's Demotion.

New Year - Rotary Connects the World

As we start our new year under Cathy's lead, invoices for dues are being distributed both electronically and printed copy. As in past years, payments made in full by July 1 include a $10 discount.

Of course, there will be plenty of other opportunities for you to give as you wish throughout the year. Your invoice includes options for additional contributions toward Paul Harris Fellows or generous donations towards our own club expenses or to our Club Foundation. If you would prefer to just pay your dues as usual, that's perfectly OK also. Your Board is here to help make this coming Rotary year fun, rewarding and hassle-free  Let us know what you think!

This Week - AbleCarts with Tyler and Kevin Szura

tkMomentum is a nonprofit organization that creates employment and social opportunities for people with disabilities. Founded by Tyler Szura and inspired by his brother Kevin Szura who has cerebral palsy, both Tyler and Kevin were born and raised in Nevada County. AbleCarts is tkMomentum's first employment program, which is a grocery delivery service operated by people with disabilities. AbleCarts provides customers in the community the opportunity of convenience while supporting the fair wages, job/social skills development, and upward mobility for people with disabilities in Nevada County.

Tyler Szura, Executive Director of tkMomentum (DBA: AbleCarts) is a Nevada County native with a passion to access the true potential of people with disabilities. He created tkMomentum in 2017 and developed its first employment program AbleCarts in 2018. He currently manages the organizations day to day operations from training's to delivery to fundraising. Tyler draws from his experience working towards an Electrical Engineering degree, to provide a tech approach when developing opportunities and limiting employment barriers for people with disabilities. He also draws from his experience collaborating with his brother Kevin, when developing training plans and out of the box idea's for enhanced success for people with disabilities. When Tyler is not working, he enjoys hanging out with his family and cooking good food.

Kevin Szura, Employee Advocate of tkMomentum (DBA: AbleCarts) is also a Nevada County native with a passion to be an integral part of the workforce community and advocate for his peers with a disability. Kevin acts as a liaison between the public and people with disabilities. His work ethic, tenacity, and intelligence proves the capabilities of disabled individuals. He also manages AbleCarts inventory from images (for enhanced employment inclusion for individuals who cannot read or write), pricing, and organization for our soon to be launched online store. When Kevin is not working away, he enjoys eating.

Rotary Ramblers

Each Tuesday morning at 8:00am Cathy leads a group of Rotary Ramblers on easy hikes around our community.  Destinations change each week so check with Cathy if you want to ramble along with the group.

Children's Festival - July 19

This year's Children’s Festival, which is scheduled for Friday, July 19, at Pioneer Park in Nevada City.  Nevada City Rotary has been involved with planning and hosting crafts -- especially Nancy Kemp, Gayle Denney and Sandy Stickel for many years.  The planning team is now in the process of organizing all the volunteers it takes to make the festival a reality!

The Festival has two sessions.  The morning session runs from 9 a.m. to noon.  We then take a break (during the heat of the day) and come back for an evening session from 5-8 p.m.  We will have about 25 crafts tables at each session, and each table needs 3-5 volunteers to help the kids create their works of art.  We also have a number of activities that are especially well suited for teens who want to volunteer (and we provide documentation of community service).

Please get in touch with Robin (as Sandy and Walt are traveling in July) and Gayle if you would like to work the Solar Sunprint or Renaissance Rubbings craft tables.  Or get in touch with Nancy if you would like to volunteer for other crafts.
