Rotario June 28, 2018

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

This Week:  President Cathy's Demotion - 5:30pm at Burke's Home

Watch for a separate special message later from Cathy as we prepare to celebrate Cathy's Demotion.  On Thursday our 5:30pm celebration means NO NOON lunch meeting. We have had a fabulous response for what will be a really FUN Rotary evening.  Carla and John Burke are again opening their beautiful home at 11600 Red Dog Rd in Nevada City. Directions: Take Boulder St from the bottom of Broad St in Nevada City 1.16 miles up the hill.  Burke's home is on the left.  Watch for parking signs on the right about 1/2 block below John and Carla's home.

Dinner is $25 per person and it is BYOB

July 1 - New Rotary Year Dues for 2018-2019

Dues invoices were distributed at last week's meeting and then mailed to everyone else. You will notice something new on your Dues statement this year. You have the opportunity to donate money toward your Paul Harris Fellow, club expenses or the Nevada City Rotary Foundation at the time you pay your dues. Sort of a one-stop shopping approach to simplify your busy lives. Now, with one check you can fulfill your Rotary obligations. Of course, there will be plenty of other opportunities for you to give as you wish throughout the year. By collecting things such as E.R.E.Y. (Every Rotarian Every Year achieved when all members give $25.00) or your contribution towards being a Paul Harris Sustaining member ($100.00 per year), or generous donations towards our own club expenses or to our Club Foundation, we will have a better idea of where our club stands financially and where to direct our fundraising efforts. If you would prefer to just pay your dues as usual, that's perfectly OK also. Your Board is here to help make this coming Rotary year fun, rewarding and hassle-free  Let us know what you think!

The following is a breakdown of where you dues are allocated:

Goes to Amount
  Rotary International   $    60.00
  The Rotarian   $    10.00
  District 5190   $    38.00
  Club operations   $    67.00  (*$57.00)
  Total Dues 2018-2019         $ 180.00 (*$170 by July 15)

Last Week - the Delights of Blending a Young Family

John and Susie Monary-Wilson shared the delights and challenges of blending a family with five young children.  Two were Susie's and three were John's all under the age of 7.  So many thoughtful, valuable lessons learned a long the way.  Both John and Susie were successfully engaged in their own careers with young children when they met.

Sorting through the his, hers, all, and none-for-just-us time came with sweet (though certainly some not so easy to navigate) moments as the family came together.  Imagine a station wagon filled with 5 high energy personalities plus Mom and Dad bopping down California freeways headed to Disneyland and beyond.  $5 seemed to go a long way in negotiating peace settlements among them even with luggage flying off the top of the car!  And John and Susie have shared decades of monthly B&B weekends sans children to fuel what is clearly a wonderful relationship!

Friendship Exchange with Lyazzat Alshinova, President Astana Rotary July 1- 8

Lyazzat and Carolyn are now together in Toronto for the Rotary International Conference this week.  They will arrive in Nevada City Saturday night for our Friendship Exchange July 1-8. Lyazzat Alshinova, is outgoing president of our Twin Club in Astana, Kazakhstan club.

We have a full schedule next week and would love for Club members to participate as much as possible with events throughout the week. Our intention is to provide Lyazzat with a memorably wonderful experience during her Friendship Exchange much as she and Astana Rotary did for Carolyn last summer. We want to show her our region, customs, our club’s Rotary projects and hospitality, etc.

Children's Festival

A big thank you to Nancy Kemp for her year round planning efforts and leadership for this very special Nevada City Renaissance Festival for so many years!  And to Sandy Stickel and Gayle Denney who are against hosting craft tables for the children.  Volunteering at the Children's Festival is always lots of fun because the children with their parents and grandparents have such a fabulous time.  Check with Sandy and Gayle to volunteer in supporting with nature sun prints or renaissance block prints.

2018 Nevada County Fair

Bushels of Fun are what we are planning for this year's Nevada County Fair!

As always, Walt Stickel has the signup sheet in great shape already. There are some openings, especially for the 7-close shifts left so make sure you've got your name on the shifts you want before they are gone and ask family members or friends to join you for a shift.

A great selling point is that fact that it is always a blast, they get to see people they haven't seen in ages because EVERYONE stops by our booth for the great pulled-pork sandwiches and, as if that isn't enough, they get a free ticket into the fair.

Watch for a work party to clean up and prep our booth in late July!!!

Join us August 8 – 12, 2018

We need your support and partnership serving at the Fair!

Join us at our Nevada City Rotary booth on Treat Street as we dish up Pulled Pork and Shredded Chicken sandwiches for our annual community service fundraiser.  We need to fill 100 openings to cover the 5 days of the Fair.  We are asking Nevada City Rotarians be responsible for filling at least 3 shifts during Fair Week -- in the spirit of sharing the load we encourage you to engage friends and colleagues to work with us.  Working with friends and family is fun and a great way to serve not just Rotary but our Community!  Click to the Latest Schedule icon to check for open shifts.

To schedule to work one or more shifts, send an email to stating which shift you are available and willing to cover.  We ask you to be reponsible for finding a replacement in the event you can not make your shift.  THANK YOU for all you do in service for Rotary, our Club and our Community!

2019 District Conference - Rotary 4-Way Fest

In case you haven't heard we will be having a multi-District conference for 2019. This will not only be an opportunity to meet Rotarians from 3 other Districts but also a time for joint service projects, interactive breakouts and great fellowship. Planning for this Rotary 4-Way Fest started last year and will be held in Reno at the Peppermill.  Early bird registration is open at a special $205.00 for all meals for the conference price and room registration is also open.  Early bird pricing is good through July 1st. All those entered will also be entered into a drawing for 2 nights and 3 days at Wally's Hot Springs in Genoa.
