Dear Rotarians and Friends,
* * * THIS WEEK MOVED TO * * *
, NEVADA COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS
Next week moved to Area Speech Contest
Tuesday April 3rd 12 Noon
at Grass Valley Methodist Church
Wednesday March 28: Area Wide Special Community Awards Ceremony
Well, we certainly have experienced a little bit of everything weather-wise this past week but today spring seems to be in the air. If you managed to make our meeting last week you could tell by the torrent of water coming down Gold Run Creek that we had quite a bit of rain. But this week all should be sunny and clear as Area 4 Rotary Clubs gather on Wednesday night in the Main Exhibit Hall at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. We will be holding the first, of what we hope will become "Annual", Community Awards Ceremony. Come out and join other Rotarians and community members to celebrate and honor local businesses and citizens who take that extra step to make our community great. Tickets will still be available at the door on Wednesday evening. Dinner will be provided by Bill's Chuckwagon. Each Rotary Club will have a table showcasing what we are doing in our community and beyond and allowing us to share the Rotary experience with others. In addition to a great program featuring District 5190 Governor Doug McDonald, there will be music and door prizes. It will be a fun evening and a great way to mix and mingle with other Nevada County Rotarians and citizens.
Speaking of last week, I forgot to mention Professional Pet Sitter Wendy Barnhart, our guest speaker at the March 15th mixer. For those of you who were unable to attend due to the inclement weather, you missed a good talk. Wendy was not only informative but she was funny and brought new insights into a profession that I didn't know much about. Who would have known they teach CPR for animals and that it has to be used more often than you'd think? Who would have thought that people get pet sitters for snakes, scorpions and iguanas? But then again, why not??
Last Week - Five Wishes with Christine Newsom
At our meeting on March 22nd, our own Christine Newsom gave us a great presentation on "The Five Wishes." She made a topic that can be sometimes hard to discuss approachable and doable. Have you had "the talk" with your loved ones? Do you have an Advanced Directive so that if something should happen, someone will know what decisions you want made; not only about your immediate medical care but once you are deceased. Do you want life support? Do you want to be cremated or buried? Do you want an obituary or not? A funeral, a celebration of life, a memorial or nothing at all? These are just some of the important details we need to get down in writing BEFORE something happens. Thank you Chris for showing us a way to discuss these difficult things with those who matter to us.
Next Week - Area Speech Contest
The Area speech contest is coming up on April 3rd and, unfortunately, we will not have another club meeting before that date so please contact Michael Young and let him know if you plan on attending. It will be held at the Grass Valley Methodist Church and a pasty lunch will be provided. Michael needs to turn in the number attending from our club to guarantee a pasty pie for everyone so let him know soon. Our regular meeting is moved to Tuesday the 3rd so plan to attend and show support for our young people who are so articulate and bright. They are our future and from what we saw at our club contest, the future is in good hands!
Los Barriles Project
Less than a month away now! It's going to be both rewarding and fun and a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians better.
Having last minute thoughts about joining our illustrious group? See Carolyn Feuille!
Estoy tan emocionada!
Trolley Junction - Our Ongoing New Location
As reported last week, the Board has approved our formal move to Trolley Junction at Northern Queen. Our standard lunch and social mixer price will remain the same at $14 and $5. However after discussions about our new location and options, the Board has voted to suspend the no lunch option.
Our Fifth Thursday of the month has been dark for the last year unless another special event falls that week. We are exploring a "No Host Social" at Nevada City Winery for upcoming 5th Thursdays starting in May. No program, truly just a social hour with our Club, friends and family.

2018 Nevada County Fair Time August 8-12
We need your support and partnership serving at the Fair!
August 8 – 12, 2018
Join us at our Nevada City Rotary booth on Treat Street as we dish up Pulled Pork and Shredded Chicken sandwiches for our annual community service fundraiser. We need to fill 100 openings to cover the 5 days of the Fair. Nevada City Rotarians are expected to work at least 2 shifts during Fair Week -- in the spirit of sharing the load we encourage you to engage friends and colleagues to work with us. Working with friends and family is fun and a great way to serve not just Rotary but our Community! Click to the Latest Schedule icon to check for open shifts.
To schedule to work one or more shifts, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org (link sends e-mail) stating which shift you are available and willing to cover. We ask you to be reponsible for finding a replacement in the event you can not make your shift. THANK YOU for all you do in service for Rotary, our Club and our Community!
Treats and Hosts for Girls Who Code
The program will wind down in April. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL who have actively supported this year's Girls Who Code Program. Special shout outs to Trisha Dellis who as Nevada City Superintendent of Schools is our program host and Leslie May, GWC facilitator extraordinaire!
The girls certainly appreciate the snacks ~ it is good to offer something sweet, something salty, including something filling. Old reliables include chips, granola bars, juice drinks, cupcakes, pretzels, brownies, bagels, etc. If you have not signed up for a slot, please contact Nancy. Many thanks to those who volunteer to bring snacks!
GWC club meets in the library at Seven Hills Middle School, starting at 3:30 pm on Tuesdays. When bringing snacks, please arrive by 4:15 for 4:30 serving. Snacks are served in the covered patio just outside the library, while the weather stays fair, and in the Teacher’s Lounge when the weather turns foul. Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Lane, opposite SPD Market off the far end of Brock Rd. From the main parking lot, go through the open hallway past the central office. The library and patio are just outside the hallway.
