Rotario May 11, 2017

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Welcome to our latest Rotario newsletter. Once again it is a pleasure keeping you informed of our club activities in the coming weeks.

This Week - John Woodford Presents Status of the Club Foundation

As you probably already know, a number of years ago our club formed its own charitable foundation that qualifies as a 501(c)(3) tax deductible entity. This was formed to allow club members to contribute to a foundation that sponsors youth scholarships and other activities at a local level, while still being tax-deductible. The responsibility of overseeing our Nevada City Rotary Club Foundation has been placed in the capable hands of our own tax accountant, John Woodford. A board consisting of five additional club members oversees the activities of the Foundation. We asked John to give us the status of the Foundation on an annual basis, which he will do this meeting.

Last Week - Stacy Drake & Karen Young, Editors of the Advocate Newspaper

Co-founder/mastermind Stacy Drake and writer/reporter extraordinaire Karen Young shared stories and history of our special community voice the Nevada City Advocate. Stacy passed around the very first issue of the Advocate that included a story about our Club! Their intention is to highlight the unique extended community of Nevada City. Reader base extends well beyond the foothills -- local advertisers claim customers from Sacramento and beyond learn about them in the Advocate! And they love producing the Advocate! Watch out -- we may see more frequent editions in the coming months! Thank you ladies! We love the Nevada City Advocate.  Read more at www.nevadacityadvocate.com Cathy shared that most issues are on file at the Foley Library.

Cathy acknowledged our guest Jim Morris who with his wife Miriam Morris has led efforts to keep Nevada City clean and especially Miner's Trail. Thank you Jim and Miriam. Click to read the article from last summer's Union about their efforts! They lead the Wednesday Morning Community Service project each week.

Anne King visited Thursday night to invite Nevada City Rotary to participate in this year's Sierra Gold Masters Track and Field Festival and Heros Relay on May 20 at NU. She wowed us with tales of a 70 year old pole faulter!!!  They need volunteers.  If interested call Kathy Lehman at 472-8694 or email princesskjl@nccn.net Learn more at http://sgmtff.org

Rock Creek moves to Lion's Lake at Nevada County Fair
Tuesday May 16 9:30am - 1:00pm

We all have fond memories of our Rock Creek and Empire Mines outing.  Seven Hills Leadership class members are paired with Adaptive Education students for whatever the event entails.  This year our very special day serving lunch to the students is moving to Lion's Lake to the west of the RV Park at Nevada County Fairgrounds. (Enter the Fairgrounds through Gate 4/5)  The teachers are planning field day events including fishing for the students and Nevada City Rotary will serve picnic and sandwiches.  Last year's event was at Empire Mine, this year at the school's request, we are moving to Lion's Lake.

Sign up with Robin or simply click and reply to this Rotario email!

We need folding tables and COOKIES!  Please let Robin know if you have a table you can bring and/or cookies.  BBQs are not needed!!!!!

This event is sure to touch your heart and remind you of why you are a Rotarian!!!

Booth Winterization and Water Damage - update

We have lots of good news to report here! First, the installation of the plywood panels in the cooking area, the installation of the door to the cooking area, and the protective covering of the compressor are all complete! Also, now that we've had some good weather, the swamp cooler has been removed from the the air duct and the repairs of the leak in the roof are nearing completion. The last two steps will be to reinstall the swamp cooler, and complete the drywall repairs inside the booth. A big shout-out goes to our sidewalk supervisor, Tom Ryan for overseeing these efforts. Also thanks to Ben Aguilar, A&A Air Conditioning Heating & Sheet Metal for generously assisting with the swamp coolerr and the Patch Man for roof repairs.

So naturally we're starting to circulate the sign-up sheet for staffing all of the 100 work shifts. We're hoping that each active member will help "Share the Load" and not only be able to staff at least two shifts per member, but also recruit friends and relatives for additional shifts.

Save the Date:  June 28 for Walt's Demotion Party  – Judy Soldavini and hubby George Roberts are once again hosting this year's Demotion Party at their beautiful Bridge House on Wednesday June 28.  Celebration begins at 5:30pm with dinner et al at 6:30pm.  Please note, we will also need a setup crew for tables and chairs late morning. More details to follow.

The Rotary Foundation (TRF):  Some good news here, due to a late surge in donations to the Rotary International Foundation, our club exceeded our target goal of $3000 before the April 30 cutoff. Our club also exceeded our target goal for donations to Polio Plus !

Fundraising efforts

Club Yard Sale/ Flea Market: Cathy Wilcox-Barnes  has established June 17 as the date for this event. The location for the event will be at Dave Robinson's garage, at the corner of Zion and Argall.  We are asking club members to continue accumulating saleable items for the yard sale. Also, Cathy is looking for volunteers to help set-up, staff the event, and perform tear down duties. We are anticipating needing an early in the morning shift, ending around midday, and an afternoon shift that will help clean up. Please contact Cathy or Pres. Walt if you wish to sign up for either shift.
