This Week - Lori Osmond - “Situational Awareness and Empowerment”

Lori Osmond is high school teacher and a Damsel in Defense facilitator though her ultimate goal is to educate everyone on being safe through being aware of your surroundings and not get caught in a situation you don't want.

Damsel in Defense saves lives and families. One in 5 women are survivors of rape. College age girls are 4 times more likely to be assaulted. A child is abducted every 40 seconds.  One in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18. One in 3 women experiences domestic violence from their partners.

From President Tom:

Our Foundation Chair Chris led a great meeting last week giving us lots of important information about how the Rotary International Foundation works and presented some very moving and educational videos on a few of the things that the RI Foundation does.  Chris asked me to mention that with our Foundation Dinner coming up October 25th now is a great time if you have plans to donate to the RI Foundation to make out your check if you would like to have recognition at the dinner.  $25.00 qualifies you for “Every Rotarian Every Year”, $100.00 qualifies you for “Sustaining Paul Harris” and every time your total giving passes $1,000.00 you qualify for as a Paul Harris Fellow or a Paul Harris Fellow +, depending on how many times that you have accumulated another $1,000.00.  We have 18 members who are multiple Paul Harris Fellows plus Dave and Gayle Denney are Major Donors.  So bring your check for any amount of your choosing, made out to The Rotary Foundation and give it to Chris this Thursday at our regularly scheduled lunch meeting.

This past Saturday Judy and George took a break from renovating their new home and joined Cathy and I in supporting fellow member Amelia who headed up a cleanup of Pioneer Park for RAKE (Random Acts of Kindness Event).  We raked leaves and pulled some weeds while others were collecting trash, cutting trees and moving tons of sand.  All in all a great morning supporting our community.

Area 4 Social - Off Broad Street November 9

Speaking of community efforts the five Area 4 Club Presidents, spearheaded by Area 4 AG Anita have agreed to an area wide social.  Mark your calendar for November 9th.  5:30-7:30pm at Reiki Kitchen, 315 Commercial Street, Nevada City for tacos and accompaniments with a wine and beer bar for a cost of $26.00.  Following the social, tacos and refreshments there will be a concert at the Off Broad Street Theater featuring vocalist Kris Stepanian and guitarist Dominic Stepanian for a cost of $28.00.  Total cost for the evening including dinner and theater is $54.00. Click Area 4 Off Broad Street Social Flyer, or see attached, for more details.

More Fun, Food and Fellowship

There are a lot of opportunities for fun, food and fellowship coming up in the weeks ahead.  The Area Foundation Dinner replaces our regular October 25 meeting.  Area taco and theater social November 9.  And Cathy, Carla and Judy are hard at work putting together our annual Christmas Party, December 6.

Before you start to think that we are just a party club, John is hard at work organizing speech and music contests as well as forming an Interact Club at the Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning providing many opportunities to lend a hand supporting the youth in our community.  Nancy has a sign up sheet for those of you who want to volunteer to help out with Girls Who Code.  Carolyn is working out details on our 5th annual trip to Los Barriles for some International Service.  Bulbs have been ordered for the continued beautification of Penzance Park and plans are in the works for additional park and trail maintenance and clean up.

So many opportunities to provide sweat equity and/or check equity while having fun and fellowship with your favorite service organization and your really good friends.

Area 4 Foundation Dinner - October 25

The sign up sheet will go around again for our Area 4 Foundation Dinner on October 25 so have a look at your calendars and check with your mates so you’ll be able to sign up with confidence.  We will be treated at the dinner with one of Rotary’s premier speakers, J.T. Capps.  The dinner starts at 6:00 PM at the Gold Miner’s Inn in Grass Valley and the cost is $50.00 per person.  We will be catered by Antonio with a choice of Tri Tip, Salmon or Vegetarian.  The number of vegetarian plates will be limited to the number requested so be sure to let me know your preference. We will be joined by District Governor Tina Spencer and her husband Brian.

Help that we need:  Each Club is asked to provide 2 members for setup, 1 member at check-in table and 2-3 members for cleanup.  If you have not volunteered through Pres Tom please do.
