Rotario October 12, 2017

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

This Week - Lunch Club Assembly with DG Doug McDonald

9:30am  Executive Board
10:30am  Board of Directors
12:15pm  Club Meeting

Welcome DG Doug McDonald to this week's Club meeting.  Joining Rotary in 1972, Doug has been active in Rotary for most of the time since then along with his family.  His father, two brothers and wife Karen are all past club presidents.  Doug's first introduction to Rotary was as a Scout when his Rotary-sponsored troop visited the Rotary Club of Petaluma annually to provide a program during Scout Month.

Doug has spent the majority of his career as a professional staff member with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a member of the National staff as well as Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer in both Northern and Southern California.  Past President of Penn Valley Club, Doug was a founding officer of Penn Valley Rotary Foundation. A multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Paul Harris Society Member and Benefactor, Doug has held many Club and District offices. In addition to Rotary and Scouting, Doug is very active in our community as a Sheriff's volunteer, board member for Habitat for Humanity and Western Sierra Medical Clinic, and with his church.

Message from President Cathy ~ Making a Difference

I don't know about you, but it seems to me that suddenly this world has gone completely bat-crazy lately. It has been a hard couple of weeks with headline after headline bringing yet another tragedy. Some days I feel like I should just stay in bed with the covers over my head. September started with the hurricanes and the widespread devastation they wrought. October was ushered in with a madman in Las Vegas shooting innocent concertgoers. Now, a short week later, wildfires are leaving a path of destruction and we can't ignore it because the fires are literally in some of our back yards. We are scheduled for a visit this week from District Governor Doug McDonald. Doug has been evacuated from his home because of wildfire. Our own John Woodford evacuated with Janna and their two dogs. Many of the people in Area 4's Penn Valley club have been affected. Others of our own members may be affected. You, or a family member may have been affected.

It seems overwhelming doesn't it? It is overwhelming. I'm overwhelmed and reeling from all the needs. I'm overwhelmed enough to say "there are too many needs. What can I do? I'm only one person."  True. I am individually only one person but I am a Rotarian and working together with other Rotarians we can Make a Difference. The clubs in Area 4 are surveying members to find out what is needed. We'll also be learning more about what is needed in neighboring Rotary Districts such as District 5130's clubs in Santa Rosa. Our own Robin Milam is working to set up a Giving Trail campaign to help collect funds. There is an African proverb "if you think you are too small to make a difference you haven't spent a night with a mosquito."  In these hard times, let's come together as Rotarians and be a swarm of mosquitoes.

An additional note on John W, the Lobo fire started the day after he was splitting logs at home. An errant log flew up in his face knocking out a tooth and requiring stitches.  Stitches are coming out but it has been a tough tax season this year.

Heartfelt condolences go out to long-time member Larry Undercoffer whose son lost his valiant fight against cancer. Larry, you are in our hearts and prayers at this difficult time.

Thank you Mike Dobbins, PV Rotary, for the helicopter over Lake Wildwood photo from his Lobo fire video.

Last Week ~ Mystery Guest Gayle Denney

Our own Gayle Denney delighted us with her personal stories. In so doing she smoked out a gagle of fellow Nevada City Rotarians who get a kick out of diagraming sentences!  Who would have thought!  She clearly accelled as an English teacher among her many music talents!

Gayle shared her journey from Fairbury, NE to Nevada City including first date and wedding night nuggets with Naval Academy Midshipman Dave Denney (also a fellow Fairburian ...)

FUNFUNFUN!

Area 4 is hosting an all Club Social Event and Concert Friday, Nov 3 at Reiki Kitchen Event Center and Off Broadway.  Don't miss Kris Stepanian & Dominic Stepanian In Concert at Off Broad Street.

This will be a really fun Rotary social event.

Cathy's Make History Today

October 24 is World Polio Day. Plan to join us Tuesday morning October 24 on a Walk For Polio from Nevada City to Grass Valley.  Details to follow. We will keep Cathy's GivingTrail Make History Today End Polio Once and For All campaign live until October 24.  The clock is running down ~ if you want to make a donation do so now!  Many, many thanks.

Be a "sweet heart" for Girls Who Code

Treating the girls to refreshments one or more times throughout the school year is a fabulous way for you to be personally involved supporting the program. We still have open slots for later in the year!

See Dave Bunje. He is circulating a signup sheet for our support with refreshments for the girls each week.  The girls certainly appreciate the snacks. Dave suggests that it is good to bring something sweet, something salty, including something filling.  Old reliables include chips, granola bars, juice drinks, cupcakes, pretzels, brownies, bagels, etc. Lynn Ching has set the bar with hard boiled eggs, sliced apples with almond butter, popcorn and red vines.  If you have not signed up for a slot in coming months, please contact Dave.  Many thanks to those who volunteer to bring snacks!

Please note: NEW PLACE AND TIME: The club now meets in the library at Seven Hills Middle School, starting at 3:30 pm on Tuesdays. When bringing snacks, please arrive by 4:15 for 4:30 serving. Snacks are served in the covered patio just outside the library, while the weather stays fair, and in the Teacher’s Lounge when the weather turns foul. Seven Hills Middle School is at 700 Hoover Lane, opposite SPD Market off the far end of Brock Rd. From the main parking lot, go through the open hallway past the central office. The library and patio are just outside the hallway.
