Last Week's Luncheon - Chuck Scimeca

Chuck Scimeca shared stories, historical photos and video clips of life in Nevada County and Northern California during the mid-1800's. As a now retired Cal Parks Ranger, Chuck is an expert on the gold rush history of our area and delights in keeping the history alive.

Through auto and video clips, Chuck told how immigrants and tourists they made their way from Parks Bar up the Yuba to Bridgeport and on to Virginia City Utah Territory in 1840's and 1850's. Entrepreneurs of the day incluing the Nye brothers, Mathew Sparks, David Wood & Thomas Freeman introduced ferries and built bridges to cross the Yuba and gave birth to California’s early transportation and road system. Building competing toll roads through the Sierras, these pioneers opened Henness Pass to carry freight and passengers to the Comstock Strike in Virginia City.  (Image from SouthYubaRiverStatePark.org)

An Invitation:  Rotary Eighth Grade Leadership Program Graduation

You and guests are invited to celebrate the graduation of Rotary Eighth Grade Leadership (REGL) students from throughout District 5190 on Sunday, September 25th, 2016 beginning at 3 pm at Grizzly Creek Ranch in Portola, California. Again this year, Nevada City Rotary is sponsoring a team of five eighth graders from Forest Charter to participate in the September 23 - 25, 2016 session REGL.

The purpose of the REGL project is to provide high quality leadership training, with a strong emphasis on ethics, to selected 8th grade students who have demonstrated leadership skills.

REGL's aim is to provide these selected students with tools for the difficult choices that they face as they move into high school. (Image from RotaryEgle.com)
