Rotario-September 22, 2016

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Welcome to our latest Rotario newsletter. Once again it is a pleasure keeping you informed of our club activities in the coming weeks.

This Lunch program - Evans Phelps, Mayor of Nevada City

We are honored to have Nevada City Mayor Evans Phelps as our speaker at this week's lunch meeting.  Mayor Phelps will talk about current events in Nevada City as well as her own personal history.  We may even get a prelude to this year's haunted house from "The Queen of Halloween", a title she is proud to claim.

Evans Phelps served on the Nevada City Planning Commission for twelve years before being elected as City council member, which she has held for two years.  This year she is serving as mayor of Nevada City.  Evans moved to Nevada City in 1987 and purchased and renovated what is now the Outside Inn.  She retired from lodging industry and gave the Inn to her daughter Erin Thiem.

Last Week's Social - Dave Iorns, Nevada City Crystal & Glass

Dave Iorns, owner of Nevada City Crystal & Glass and business consultant shared personal stories of the many facets of his life from car dealer to small business owner and community leader.  He was joined by his wife Maryann Ray Iorns whose father created Nevada City Crystal & Glass in 1983.  Nevada City Crystal & Glass offers unique pieces in a very attractive, wide price range by selected artisans, many of whom are local.

Nevada City Rotarians Clean Miners Trail with SYRCL's Annual Cleanup Day

Dave Bunje, John Hensley, Chris Newsome and Robin Milam had a fun morning cleaning Miner's Trail as part of South Yuba River Citizen's League (SYRCL) Annual Yuba River watershed cleanup.  Almost 800 volunteers pulled tons of garbage and abandoned debris out of the Yuba River watershed from Marysville to Donner Summit.  Our Nevada City Rotary crew partnering with several young families of volunteers collected an unfathomable number of cigarette butts along with an old water pump and other gargage from Miners Trail, Deer Creek, and under the Hwy 49 overpass.

You are invited to REGL Graduation this Sunday at Grizzly Creek Ranch

You and guests are invited to celebrate the graduation of Rotary Eighth Grade Leadership (REGL) students from throughout District 5190 on Sunday, September 25th, 2016 beginning at 3 pm at Grizzly Creek Ranch in Portola, California. Again this year, Nevada City Rotary is sponsoring a team of five eighth graders from Forest Charter to participate in the September 23 - 25, 2016 session REGL.

The purpose of the REGL project is to provide high quality leadership training, with a strong emphasis on ethics, to selected 8th grade students who have demonstrated leadership skills.

REGL's aim is to provide these selected students with tools for the difficult choices that they face as they move into high school. (Image from RotaryEgle.com)
