Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Join us this Week on Zoom:

Such a Treat! Treats Ice Cream with Peggy Wright
Life in the Fast Lane!
Last week was certainly not a dull, boring time!
We started the week with the threat of wildfire moving toward Nevada City and Grass Valley, with a number of club members and many of our friends evacuating to avoid the dangers of the Jones Fire.
Much of the week was spent monitoring the progress of the fire and the efforts to control the blaze to as small an area as possible. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of all involved, the Jones Fire was contained to just over 700 acres, and though we were saddened by the loss of homes, the impact to Woolman campus, and our historic Independence Trail, our firefighters were able to keep the blaze from devastating the community.
DG Berta Presented Quiet Rotarian and Heart of Service Awards
On a much cheerier note, we had our club meeting with our District 5190 Governor Berta Pickett on Thursday. DG Berta brought us up-to-date on what is happening in our District 5190 and in Rotary International. She included personal insights about RIPN Jennifer Jones.
Berta then made a couple of very special presentations, to our club’s “Quiet Rotarian” and the new “Heart of Service” award.
The "Quiet Rotarian" award is to recognize someone who has worked hard and provided special assistance to our club without expecting recognition. This year’s recipient is John Wilson, who has done so much for our club and our Youth Service programs. Thank you and congratulations, John!
The “Heart of Service” award award is to honor someone in our club who consistently gives of their time to serve club members, who volunteers for almost every project and every club activity or event, and who promotes the good things that Rotary does wherever they go. The recipient is Cathy Wilcox-Barnes, who exemplifies “Heart of Service” in all her thoughts, words, and deeds. Thank you and congratulations Cathy!
DG Berta, thank you for “visiting” our club (next time let’s make it an in-person visit) and sharing your time with us. Thanks also to our Area Governor Lindy Beatie, who helped coordinate the DG visit.
On the home front
As things settled down at the end of the week - the danger of fire was contained and evacuees could return home - we had a chance to relax a bit and take stock of our current situation.
- In our club, we have several members who went through the dislocation of evacuation.
- We have club members that are presently taking some time away from the club to focus on their families during the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Some club members are dealing with health-related issues, and I ask that all of you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Treats Ice Cream and Peggy Wright
Our program for Thursday’s meeting is a sure bet to bring a smile to everybody’s face - Peggy Wright will join us to talk about her Treats Ice Cream Store! I don’t know about you, but I’m very likely to drive to Nevada City for an ice cream cone when the meeting is over.
Nevada City Rotary and Nevada City Chamber of Commerce presented the Business Persons of the Year award to Bob and Peggy Wright of Treats Ice Cream during the Nevada City Chamber Awards and Installation Dinner, Saturday Feb. 1. Read more about our Celebratory Scoops!

The LLA sessions are recorded and can be viewed later if you are not able to participate in the live events. This is just a sampling of what is available to all of us. With Leadership Learning Assembly, the District is highlighting and expanding key resources. Learn more at Leadership Learning Assembly.
