2021 Wild & Scenic Film Festival: A Virtual Festival Experience with Jess Swigonski, Festival Director https://wsff.eventive.org/
SYRCL’s (South Yuba River Citizens League) 19th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival will take place January 14-24, 2021 as an entirely virtual experience. Presented online, the festival will still bring together another incredible selection of films to change your world.
Each year, Wild & Scenic draws top filmmakers, celebrities, leading activists, social innovators, and well-known world adventurers to the historic downtown areas of Nevada City and Grass Valley, California. This year’s virtual experience will allow attendees from around the globe to join us for much of the same great programming Wild & Scenic has become known for.
Considered one of the nation’s premier environmental and adventure film festivals, this year’s films combine stellar filmmaking, beautiful cinematography and first-rate storytelling to inform, inspire and ignite solutions and possibilities to restore the earth and human communities while creating a positive future for the next generation. Festival-goers can expect award-winning films about nature, community activism, adventure, conservation, water, energy and climate change, wildlife, environmental justice, agriculture and more.
Equipped with a degree in Film Production and a natural affinity for the outdoors, Jess’s work with one of the nation’s premiere environmental and adventure film festivals has absolutely been a dream come true. Originally from Erie, PA, Jess moved to California after graduating from Allegheny College (Meadville, PA) in order to work for Wild & Scenic Film Festival as the Filmmaker Liaison. Jess has now transitioned into the role of Film Festival Director, taking the lead on creative content for the film festival and curating the film sessions that you will see at the event.
Her greatest passion is social and environmental justice; coming in close second is watching films. With a background in communications focusing in documentary film making, Jess has always been intrigued by the stories of individuals, communities, events, creatures, places that often go untold. Jess feels honored to be a facilitator for the telling of some remarkable, vital, and timely stories.
Holiday Celebration ~ Festive Fun & Frolic!!!
Ho! Ho! Ho! For jolly ol' Santa Claus! He made it to our party along with a well decked out crew of Rotarians and partners plus guest Rotarians DG Roberta and DGND Stacy Graham. PP Dave and Janet Bunje joined us from Studio CIty! We'll include a few photos in next week's Holiday edition!
Treat Street T-Shirt Fundraiser - for Fair and Vendors
To show appreciation to you, the organizations of Treat Street, the Fairgrounds will be running a Treat Street t-shirt promotion during the next few weeks, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Treat Street organizations.
These cool “Treat Street fanatic” t-shirts are now on sale for $12 ($20 if shipping is requested) and with each shirt sold, $6 will go to the Treat Street nonprofit of the buyer’s choice, i.e could be Nevada City Rotary!, and $6 goes to the Fairgrounds.
Here’s how it works
If an individual wants to purchase t-shirts, call the Fairgrounds office at (530) 273-6217 and specify color choices and sizes, the organization they’d like to support, and credit card information. We’ll process payment and have it ready for curbside pick-up at the Fairgrounds Office. Color choices are charcoal or army green and both come in sizes XS to XL. For those who order four or more t-shirts, we’ll throw in a surprise gift from the Fairgrounds. Colors/sizes are very limited, so please help us spread the word soon to your network of members and supporters. Once the promotion is over, we’ll send checks to those organizations that were selected/supported by t-shirt buyers.
This makes a perfect holiday gift or stocking stuffer, so please feel free to share widely to support our Club and the Fair! Colors/sizes are very limited, so order soon.

December Mask Give Away
The need for masks is still very real. However, our plans for a Mask Give Away last week shifted with the Stay-At-Home order. Susie and Lexis are looking at whether Mask Warriors have channels who could use the masks now or we reschedule after the new year. In the meanwhile, we hope you and your loved ones are well and are finding safe ways to stay connected especially through the holiday season.
Virtual International Project Fairs
Good news! We have the unique opportunity of participating in virtual Project Fairs in this Rotary year. The fairs are on Zoom and open to all Rotarians, at no cost. This arrangement is ideal for learning how project fairs work without leaving the comfort of your home and with no travel expenses. So, take advantage! Given the recent double hurricanes hitting Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala, Rotary's focus and assistance will never have been more important.
The two forthcoming project fairs in Rotary Districts 4250, 4240, and 4271:
- Uniendo America, January 28-30 in Panama City
- February 5-12 in Medellín, Colombia
Registration and project details from the fair organizers are forthcoming. Stay tuned!!
Please contact Carolyn Feuille if you have questions: cfeuille@gmail.com

Your Happy/Sad Shares make a difference!
Thank you Treasurer Tom Ryan for your ongoing diligence with our finances. And thank you Club members for following the Four Way Test with your pledges to our Club! If you have questions, Tom R is happy to discuss your statement with you.
Your Happy/Sad shares give us glimpses of what is going on in your life beyond Rotary. They are special moments together especially since so much of our time is on Zoom. Your associated "bucks" provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond. Thanks for sharing you!
Stay connected and informed
Robin monitors our news@ncrotary.org email. You can direct questions to that email or to me. As we learn more and to stay in touch, we will send out regular or more frequent Rotarios.
