Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Join us this Week on Zoom: Thursday July 9 at 12:15pm
Gifts to the World through the Rotary Foundation
With Christine Newsom
Happy Birthday America!
Our country has a fascinating and diverse history, full of many little-known happenings.
For those of you who enjoy the challenge of quizzes to test your memory of our country’s history, here are a few links to web sites that will definitely challenge your memory:

As we celebrate the 244th birthday of our country, I am thankful for all the wonderful things we enjoy as Rotarians and residents of Nevada County.
We are fortunate to be a part of a community that boasts numerous organizations dedicated to serving those in need, both in our community and the world.
Gifts to the World ...
Our Rotary Club has a long history of service to youth, to students through scholarships, to our local and global community, and to the greater Rotary organization through Polio Plus and support of the Rotary Foundation.
This week Foundation Chair Chris Newsom will focus on Gifts to the World through The Rotary Foundation. Chris will introduce Rotary's seventh new Area of Focus Supporting the Environment and share the "Power of Light" story of TRF's recent environmental project among the Diné people on a remote Navajo reservation here in the US. Chris will also give us personalized instruction on how to find your own Paul Harris Fellow status information through the Rotary.org website. Don't miss what will be both inspiring and personally instructive.
Next week we welcome as our guest presenter Chief Chad Ellis of the Nevada City Police Department. Chief Ellis will speak about the P.O.S.T. program that our Rotary Club is supporting through a scholarship to two police officer trainees.
This is a great example of our Club identifying a need in the community and stepping up to find a way to meet that need. Special thanks to our immediate Past President Cathy Wilcox-Barnes, who worked with Chief Ellis to determine how our Club could be most effective in supporting Nevada City and the Police Department.
Saturday July 11 Free COVID Mask Giveaway
This Saturday we will host our second Free COVID Mask Giveaway. We have 200 masks donated by Robin's brother Drew and ZipsFaceMasks.com plus more from Nevada County Mask Warriors. We are scheduled for an hour from 10am-11am or until we run out at Dave's Auto Repair. A big THANK YOU once again to 49er Rotarian Dave Robinson for the generous use of his business property.
Kazakhstan COVID update
Since June 25 both Lyazzat and Elina, and a few members of their families, have come down with the virus. They are now regaining their health. Kazakhstan is doing very poorly with the increasing spread of the virus. The country is under lockdown again.
Save the date - D5190 DG Roberta Pickett Visit
Save the date, August 20 for a visit from District 5190 Governor Roberta “Berta” Pickett. Berta has expressed a strong desire to meet with our Club in person rather than through a Zoom meeting, so we are starting to plan a meeting where we can come together and still observe the necessary precautions of social distancing. Tentatively we are planning an afternoon Social meeting on the front lawn of Chris Newsom’s house on Cement Hill Road. More details will be shared as plans for this meeting are firmed up.

om our Members
We understand Walt Stickel spotted Cathy on the Tribute Trail bridge last week. He convinced her not to jump by assuring her Nevada City would not press her into a 3rd term for the coming year! That means someone else really needs to step up as President Elect!
Please be current and financially responsible!
Thanks to all who have mailed in your dues! We have now launched the new year ... if you have not paid your dues please connect with Tom Ryan.

From District 5190 - Leadership Learning
Have YOU checked it out yet? The purpose of the Leadership Learning Assembly (LLA) is to prepare our club leaders, board, and all our club members – new or seasoned - for the 2020-2021 Rotary JOurneY ahead! It is sure to be exciting! This year’s theme Rotary Open Opportunities challenges us to adapt to a changed and changing environment and affirms continuous learning and continuous improvement as the way to stay on top of the wave of change around us. This virtual program is self-paced and requires self-motivation. You can choose the modules you want to take! Learn more at Leadership Learning Assembly.
