Dealing with the COVID Pandemic Around the World ~
From USA through Europe to Kazakhstan with Friends of our Club

Join us for a very special dialog about how COVID-19 is affecting the lives of friends around the world. Personal friends of Carolyn Feiulle and Carolyn Inglis will join us live from across the US and Europe.

Guests will include Linda Jones and Walter Oberlander Warren (Vermont); Paul and Elizabeth Banning (Bath, UK), Brian and Ellen Cleave (Mallorca, Spain), Carol Callison O'Bannon (San Mateo, CA) and Louis-Alain and Pierrette Roche (Paris, France)

Friends you know who have visited with us from Kazakhstan - Lyassat Alshinova and Elina Yakhtiyarova will participate by video.

Surprised and humbled...

Dear Rotary Family, from the tip of my head to the bottom of my toes, I was surprised and humbled! You all mean so much to me and your fun, generous send-off into retirement (again!) was so unexpected. I was worried you might try to turn the tables on me with a Nevada City History quiz or something. I never dreamed we would round the corner on the trail and find you all, properly masked and distanced and waving signs. To think that you would come out of isolation just to celebrate my demotion is a real honor. And to think I thought it was a protest on part of the trail being closed off! It made me miss my old activism days of the 60’s and early 70’s!

Add to all that the off-the-charts gift of a cellphone and, as you know, I was rendered speechless. Now that you’ll have dragged me in this century technologically, I hope I won’t be speechless for long and I can call each and every one of you (on my new phone) to thank you personally and to let you know how much you mean to me. Thank you for a wonderful year and I’m looking forward to continuing to work with all of you this coming year under Tom Milam’s able leadership as Rotary Opens Opportunities.

Thank you from the “Retread.”

2xPP Cathy

Double Dipping Demotion!

To celebrate the end of her second term as our Club President, Cathy had not one, but two Demotion Parties!

The first was a surprise gathering along the DS Canal where she hikes every Wednesday morning with a group of her girlfriends.  When she saw Club members spreadout along the canal, she thought we were protesters.

We then moved to Carla’s spacious deck, where we could hold a celebration and observe the proper social distancing.

The second Demotion Party was the scheduled Zoom virtual meeting on Thursday, where those who were not able to attend the Wednesday surprise party could thank Cathy for her service as Club President.

As Cathy handed over the gavel and, later, the bell as the symbols of the Club Presidency, I was reminded how fortunate I am to be your President for the coming year, leading the best Club in our entire District 5190.

I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Cathy for the outstanding leadership she has shown in her terms as President, and for her service not only to Rotary, but to each member of our Club.

As we start the 2020-2021 Rotary Year, I see some challenges ahead of us, and I know that we as a Club and as individuals will step up to these challenges and find a way to work through them.  We have already set the standard for our Area 4 Clubs by rapidly switching to virtual meetings via Zoom and by using all means at our disposal to stay in touch and engaged.

2020-2021 Rotary Opens Opportunities

The Theme for Rotary for 2020-2021 is “Rotary Opens Opportunities”.  I don’t think there could be a better theme for the year ahead of us.  We will see a long progression of “Opportunities" in the year ahead and I expect that we will find a way to open many of these opportunities to the benefit of Rotary, those we serve, and ourselves.

One of my resolutions for the coming year is to be continually in action.  Rotary has a tagline that says Rotarians are “People of Action”.  In a time of great challenges and even greater opportunities, being continually in action is the best way I can see to live up to the Rotary example of "Service Above Self”.

Smaller Ways

In the year ahead, I expect that we will find our Club doing things in a way unlike anything we have done in the past, with fewer (or no) large fundraisers.  Instead, I would like us all to focus on finding ways to get things done at a smaller scale, with a number of small events that each contributes to our Club financial security and most importantly to the engagement of our Club members.

All ideas and suggestions are welcome.  Please feel free to contact me or one of our Club Board members if you have any ideas for ways to raise money, to serve our community, or simply to have fun as a Club.

Your new President Tom

Check your email for your dues invoice!

Thanks to all who have mailed in your dues!   If you have not received your invoice, please contact incoming Treasurer Tom Ryan or reply to this email.

As we have noted, on July 1 we launch our new Rotary year which means with June comes annual dues invoices.  Under normal circumstances our Club dues would be billed at $180 for the year (or $190 if paid in increments). Due to these unprecedented circumstances, District 5190 is granting all our club members a “dues holiday” for July through December 2020. This means that the District portion of our dues for July 1 will be $0 instead of $19 for the first half of the year.  On your invoice, you will see this year's dues reduced to $161 (or $171 if you choose to pay in increments). Give a shout out to District Governor Randy Van Tassell and District Governor Elect, Berta Pickett who requested approval from the District Finance Committee for this "dues holiday"!

From our Members

COVID Face Masks: Earlier this month, we partnered with Nevada County Masks - Mask Warriors and distributed almost 200 masks made and donated by our partner group.  We are planning another COVID mask give away at Dave's Auto Repair in the coming weeks.

Robin's brother Drew Ritger has donated another 200 face masks from ZipsFaceMask.com as a personal gift to our Club project with a retail value of $2,000.  Carolyn I. is also arranging for hundreds more masks so our next give away will be even bigger than the first!

Rotary Walking Challenge: Cathy, Tom Milam and Robin are walking in the Walking Challenge.  As of Monday, Cathy has almost 25,000 steps, Tom and Robin have each walked a marathon with over 58,000 steps putting them both in the top 100 walkers for now.  It is fun walking with Rotarians around the world!!!
