Hot August in Nevada City

This is Nevada County Fair week, and for the first time in many years, we will not have a Treat Street booth. It was a unanimous decision by the incoming board at this spring’s retreat, and most of us are relieved to have relinquished that responsibility. That said, those efforts produced income that we need for our good work, and we’ll have to be creative in replacing it.  Good luck to Tall Pines Nursery who took it over and already is realizing some of the challenge that we faced in staffing all the shifts. If you are willing and able to serve a shift or two, please signup online to help staff their booth.

We are well into fire season ...

Tom and Robin Milam had the intense experience of evacuating for a night last week, and the news for residents in the Colfax area has not been good, particularly for Terry Brown, a well-known Nevada City 49’er Rotarian, and wife Karen who lost their Bear River home to the River Fire.  DGN Stacy Graham has setup a Help Rotary Raise Funds For River Fire Victims Go Fund Me to support local Community members who have lost their homes. DG Anita Daniels is encouraging contributing to Greenville Rotary Club’s  Greenville Strong Go Fund Me drive to help their town which has been decimated by fire.  I visited Greenville as DG and it was once a beautiful little town. So sad. The Nevada County Relief Fund’s Community Advisory Council established the “River Fire Fund” today to accept donations and will direct funds as they learn from our nonprofit and County partners where the needs are greatest. Our Club Board is researching the various funds that are being created to determine what actions we may take to support our community including Rotary families.

Before this fire season is over, more friends in our Rotary district may be in need.  So, the lesson now is to feel fortunate for the roofs over our heads, despite the smoky air, right?

Dokimos Pharmacy Community Vocational Service Award

Our club was out in full force outside Dokimos Pharmacy on Thursday for the surprise flash mob presentation to Dokimos Pharmacy’s Kelly Dokimos and Jacque Dokimos Paye of our first ever Community Vocational Service Award. Rotary’s 4-Way Test serves as a basis for determining the recipient of a plaque and a gift certificate to Twelve28 Restaurant. This award will most likely become an annual Nevada City Rotary event.

Thank you Gayle and Walt for The Union article! Well done.

Circular Economy—Sustainable World - Environmental Sustainability

While we are all eager to be face to face again, given the spikes in COVID due to the aggressive Delta variant, our Board has unanimously decided to return to Zoom for our weekly Club meetings.  The decision will be reviewed again at our September 13 Board Meeting. In the meanwhile, please stay connected and engaged. This week's meeting will include a special program by our new Environmental Sustainability Committee.

Through Rotary's new seventh Area of Focus, Rotary supports activities that strengthen the conservation & protection of natural resources, advance environmental sustainability, and foster harmony between people & the environment.  Your new ES Committee will educate us on some of the ways we interact with this area of focus as we go about our daily lives, by our purchases, our waste management, and our policy-making.  The program is entitled Circular Economy—Sustainable World.

Nevada County Public Health Recommends Masking Indoors

We ask that all Rotarians, vaccinated and unvaccinated, please wear a mask during our meetings in accordance with updated Nevada County recommendations released June 30, 2021.  "Due to the recent dramatic increase in cases of COVID-19 in our community and following recently released Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidelines, the Nevada County Public Health Officer strongly recommends masking indoors. Nevada County’s daily case rate and case positivity rate have drastically increased 10 fold in less than a month.
