Just a summer thing?

I don’t know if it’s me or just a summer thing, but the weeks just seem to be flying by.  And what a week it has been Jack flew back to Costa Rica on Wednesday night and was back in school on Thursday morning.  His highlights here were of course his new best friend Cooper, filling lunch bags at the Food Bank and the great relief that I have so many friends to keep me busy and happy.  Thank you, Nevada City Rotary.

Pearce has rejoined our ranks and was welcomed back with a stellar re-induction by the Membership Committee.  Well done.

Chris spearheaded a great presentation by our Environmental Sustainability Committee on the meaning and impact of a circular economy at last week’s meeting and left us with an assignment to check out a three minute video on Rotary's new Protecting the Environment focus by ESRAG and to contemplate how best we can do our part to help reduce green-house gases.

The Fair has come and gone, wasn’t that easy. Walt slipped into the Fair Grounds and helped shepherd Tall Pines Nursery through the ins and outs of running the booth and I hear that his guidance and expertise were much appreciated.  Thanks Walt and thank you and good luck to Tall Pines.

We have a new Fundraising Committee and Cathy, Carolyn, Kim and Dennis will be joining me to try and noodle out a fun, exciting and profitable event for you all to lend a hand and a few bucks to in order to fund and support the goals and activities of our club.  If anyone has an idea for something that might fill the bill send it to me no matter how wacky you think it might be.  We are brainstorming here so the more that we have to think about the more likely we are to come up with a good one.

As we count our blessings for having dodged a bullet from the River Fire those that were not so fortunate are in our hearts.  At our last board meeting Robin volunteered to research a good place to make donations for the benefit of victims and came up with this:

River Fire Relief

Nevada County Relief Fund is looking to raise $150,000 for River Fire victims.

In August 2020, the Nevada County Relief Fund established the Wildfire Relief and Recovery Fund to respond to the impact of wildfire in our region. We accept cash donations and will direct funds as we learn from our nonprofit and county partners where the needs are greatest. We thank you for your generous spirit and care for those in crises in our community.

All funds raised from August 5th through Labor Day will be made available to survivors of the River Fire from Nevada County. County Department of Social Services caseworkers will vet requests for assistance.

Donations may be made safely and are tax deductible through our fiscal sponsor, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation.

We have moved the Governor’s visit from this week to November 4th in the hopes of being able to meet in person.  On short notice Cathy has agreed to fill in as the program and any time that she is sharing from her incredible wealth of knowledge of Nevada City history you can count on me to be there and I hope to see you there too.

Nevada City on the National Register of Historic Places

PP Cathy takes us on a walk back in time to learn about the movers and shakers who valued the historical legacy of Nevada City and were dedicated to preserving and sharing the City's history and heritage.  WIth her infinite wisdom of historical gems, Cathy will give a A Brief History of Nevada City Historic District Placement on the National Register.

Starting a Sewing Circle to make Menstrual Hygiene Management kits

Nevada City Rotary is embarking on a new program that allows girls and young women to comfortably leave their homes to attend school, market or work away from home during their menstrual cycle.  With guidance from Ramona Delmas of the Bishop Sunrise Rotary Club and training from Altrusa International Eastern Sierra in Bishop, Carolyn Feulle, Lynda Guthrie and other Nevada City Rotarians and friends will create colorful menstrual kits similar to those produced by Days for Girls. When completed, these kits will be given to girls and young women in Chiapas, Mexico. We hope to expand the program to girls and young women in Los Barriles via the Rotary Club of Los Barriles and in Guatemala via Amigos de Guatemala.

To get this program off the ground, Carolyn and Lynda are looking for three or more Rotarians who will meet at 11:15 am.right before the August 26 meeting to discuss this program and how to move forward with a sewing circle. Ramona Delmas is open to organizing a late September-early October training session in Bishop.  Carolyn and Lynda are hopeful that additional Rotarians will commit to the project, participate in the training, and become a part of the team that meets monthly to create the kits.  For those interested who cannot attend the training in Bishop with Altrusa, the core group who gets trained will be authorized to train others in making the kits.

Meeting time:  11:15 am. August 26
