Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Thursday August 26, 2021, 12:15pm Lunch via ZOOM
Leah Schwinn - Health Care for All
Returning to Zoom at least through September 9
Same ZOOM link works!!!
“Deep Purple” was a song from my parents’ generation. Unfortunately, it described the air quality earlier today. With Zoom coming to us all again, courtesy of COVID, and now with air quality, we’re stuck inside again.
Spending some time with August’s Rotary magazine today, I read RI President Shekhar Mehta’s message on the first page. His call to action regarding membership is “Each One, Bring One.” If we can’t be meeting in person for a while, we can at least be thinking about who it is that we might consider asking when our groups of three Rotarians team up to meet with potential members.
The person I’m thinking about is younger by a generation than I am, has a parent who was a Rotarian, and probably will be “too busy” at first blush. Oh, I just remembered that Mexico has often been a vacation destination for this potential Rotarian and her family, so our team will definitely need to talk up Los Barriles.
Click Deep Purple to enjoy and reminisce with Bing Crosby!
Leah Schwinn - Health Care for All
A native of the Bronx and a first generation American, Leah Schwinn spent her childhood in New York. Then as a young adult she moved to London. Returning to the US, Leah headed west to Northern California where she has lived since 1966. She served as a K-8 teaching assistant for 25 years, much of those years in Special Ed. When she and her husband retired, they followed their son and daughter-in-law to Nevada County.
Today Leah serves as Chair for the Nevada County Chapter of Health Care for All California, The organization is a statewide non-partisan, non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to achieving universal health care through single-payer public financing.
EMPOWERMENT FOR GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN:
Training for Sewing Circle to make Menstrual Hygiene Management kits
Volunteer Zoom Meeting : 11:15 am Thursday August 26
Questions? Call Lynda at 707-236-0220 or Carolyn at 650-867-4564
Nevada City Rotary is embarking on a new program that allows girls and young women to comfortably leave their homes to attend school, market or work away from home during their menstrual cycle. To get this program off the ground, Carolyn and Lynda are looking for three or more Rotarians who will meet at 11:15 am right before this week's meeting to discuss this program and how to move forward with a sewing circle.
Ramona Delmas is open to organizing a late September-early October training session in Bishop. Carolyn and Lynda are hopeful that additional Rotarians will commit to the project, participate in the training, and become a part of the team that meets monthly to create the kits. For those interested who cannot attend the training in Bishop with Altrusa, the core group who gets trained will be authorized to train others in making the kits.
When completed, these kits will be given to girls and young women in Chiapas, Mexico. We hope to expand the program to girls and young women in Los Barriles via the Rotary Club of Los Barriles and in Guatemala via Amigos de Guatemala.
