Greetings and Welcome to another wonderful week of Rotary!

After being away for a while, Gayle and I found it so nice to be in downtown Nevada City on Sunday night. We were surprised how many people were still in town, thinking that tourists would have left. But we can see that people who visit are really enjoying their getaway to Nevada City. The National 2018We had dinner at Lola’s, the new restaurant in The National Exchange Hotel, and found it a very pleasant evening. I can’t help but think, however, about all the times we Rotarians met in that same location when Tom Coleman was our fellow Rotarian and proprietor.  Time moves on, and so do we. And hurray for all the wonderful changes made at that location! In a way, it is symbolic about weighing what things we in Rotary want to keep and what things we want to improve upon.

The club is off to a strong start this year. We’ve already started meeting in person, and we had a personal club meeting with RI Past President Ian Riseley who next year will be the Chairman of the Rotary Foundation. Thanks again to Doug for pulling that together.  Our International Foundation Global Grant has been approved, and we’ll be sending a very talented scholar off to England in a month to perform Artificial Intelligence research. Tom Ryan worked hard and fast to get that first grant of this sort. We Rotarians can rest assured that money given to the Foundation is very carefully expended.

When I say we’re off to a good start, part of that was shown by the fantastic board meeting we had Monday afternoon. Almost all Avenues of Service and Committees were represented, along with all officers. We’re grateful to Rotarian John Hensley for providing such a convenient—and air conditioned—place to meet right on Broad Street.  Several of the committees have already begun meeting and planning, and you are encouraged if you haven’t already to join the efforts of one of our avenues of service.

Some decisions made by the board are that we are going to “brown bag” our meetings up until September. The meeting committee is weighing various food options to begin at that time.  We, of course, pay rent on our meeting room in The Litton Building, and so we’ll be collecting $10 from each Rotarian to cover our costs.

Tom Ryan and I will continue to alternate presiding over our weekly meetings, and Tom will be at the podium this Thursday. It will be a thought-provoking speaker, given the local interest in his subject.

Co-President Dave
