Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Thursday June 10, 2021 - Lunch 12:15pm
David Whitehead from Nevada County Citizens Climate Lobby
plus a Foundation Moment
With the start of the new Rotary Year 2021-2022 on July 1, Rotary International’s new focus on “Protecting the Environment” officially launches. This new area of focus will provide Rotarians an avenue to work within our local communities and throughout the world to support our life-sustaining environment.
Rotary continues to be a non-political organization. For those Rotarians who desire to be involved with climate support issues at a political level outside of Rotary, there are many choices of non-Rotary organizations that are working to protect the environment.
This week we will hear from David Whitehead of the Nevada County Citizens Climate Lobby. Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, grassroots advocacy climate change organization focused on national policies to address climate change. The Nevada County chapter is just one of over 500 chapters across the world working to create the political will for a livable world. The local chapter has about 50 active members and a roster of over 600 interested supporters.
David has lobbied Congressional offices several times, both in Washington DC and at the local Congressional District offices. The Nevada County Chapter of CCL has grown steadily, using all five of the levers of political will to build relationships and support for climate action. The chapter has obtained resolutions of endorsement for the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act from both the City of Nevada City and the Nevada Irrigation District, and is planning to offer a resolution of support to the City of Grass Valley this year. Our Grassroots Outreach activities help community volunteers take action in the local community to develop support for climate action.
David J. Whitehead is a registered Civil Engineer retired from a 28-year public service career. Since moving to Grass Valley in 2016, he volunteered at several local non-profit organizations, such as KVMR and Wolf Creek Community Alliance, before starting the Nevada County Chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby in 2017.

Next week a team goes in to pack summer lunches for youth who have started their summer out of school. And yes, the time frames for the two days are different. Robin is the team lead this week and Susie will be the lead next week if you have questions.
