Staying Connected June 23 2022

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Thursday June 23,  12:15pm
HYBRID - InPerson Zoom at Litton Engineering
200 Litton Drive, Crass Valley

Carolyn Feuille: U.S. Relations with Russia:
From Cold to Warm to Cold Again

A legendary passing of the scepters

This is my final contribution to The Rotario, as co-presidents Tom and I have been duly and royally demoted. What a fun evening it was! Thanks have already been passed along to Judy and Cathy for organizing, to Chris for hosting, and to those who helped get everything in place. To every Rotarian who contributed to our very generous gifts, thank you so much. And your being at our demotion made it a Party!

When I was district governor—yes, 20 years ago—my training made me so aware of the orderly transfer of power that occurs within our organization. From the level of club president and district governor, all the way up to President of RI, we turn over responsibility on a yearly basis.  It is a wise decision by Rotary to mix things up and share the wealth of responsibility, rather than have a president continue. And we even make club plans on just a yearly basis, so that the new board coming in isn’t “stuck” with a responsibility that a previous board put in place on an ongoing basis.

By the time The Rotario comes to your inbox, the new board will have had its retreat, and Nevada City Rotary will be ready for its new year on July 1. Tom and I turn over our scepters to Carolyn and Chris, knowing that our club will be in good hands and looking forward to any changes that fresh thinking and a new board will bring our way.

Thank you for everything you did, big and small, in service to our club in the 2021-2022 year.

CoP Dave (and Tom)

U.S. Relations with Russia: From Cold to Warm to Cold Again with Carol Feuille

Carolyn Feuille will summarize a presentation on this topic that she made in May to an AAUW-Nevada County Interest Group that focuses on US foreign policy. Her overview will include a look at Russia in these areas: its world position, its strengths and weaknesses as a world power, its leadership over the last century, its fear of NATO, and sources of conflict with the US.

In 2019, Carolyn Feuille retired from her career as a global leadership coach assisting leaders and their multicultural teams to master the challenges of the global work environment, and preparing executives and their families for successful international assignments. Over the years, she also trained thousands of foreign-born professionals in enhancing communication skills for career advancement.

Her international career and interests influenced her to go on an orthodox art tour in Russia in 2017.  She has since learned more about Russian politics through AAUW (American Association of University Women), which is the basis of her presentation for us.

July 16: Area 4 Social 3 - 6pm at Curious Forge

Big new plans for Hungry Games II in the Park! Yes in Pioneer Park from 4pm - 7pm, Sunday afternoon September 4.  Watch this space and Club meetings for more details as plans unfold.  Our winning Chef Jason Jillson and the Ham Stand crew will be back serving up gourmet specialties to the tunes of Sgt Funky Band!

Plans are forming for another big Restaurant Raffle along with an array of other enticing raffles are in the works.  Speaking of Asks, our Fundraising Team needs your partnership in collecting merchandise, art and gift certificates from your favorite restaurants and businesses around our community!

Your Dues and Happy/Sad Shares make a difference!

2022-2023 DUES INVOICES have been sent! Check your email for annual dues invoices from Treasurer Tom.  As we prepare to start a new Rotary year, annual dues invoices are due by July 1.  Tom reminds us that a good time to make an annual contribution is with your dues.  If for some reason you haven't seen an invoice, let Tom know!

Your Happy/Sad shares give us glimpses of what is going on in your life beyond Rotary.  They are special moments together especially since so much of our time is on Zoom.  Your associated "bucks" provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond.

REMINDER - Please send in your Happy Sad/Bucks

You will not be billed for your Happy Sad/Bucks pledges.  We ask that you track your own pledges and submit your payment at the end of each month.  Here is a Happy/Sad Bucks tracking form you can download and use to track your pledges.   As always, payments go to Nevada City Rotary, PO Box 74, Nevada City, CA 95

Thanks for sharing you and for following the Four Way Test with your Happy Buck pledges to our Club!

Recycling bins around town

Grass Valley Rotary is taking the lead for the second 6th-month cycle with our Plastics Recycling. A big thanks to our Environmental Sustainability Committee who is partnering with our Area 4 Clubs.

Add your clean stretchable plastics to other bins around town - Briar Patch, B&C, the Library, ReStore, Peace Lutheran, Nevada City and Wolf Creek/Grass Valley CoHousing.  And we are adding Wild Birds Unlimited!

Read more on what can and cannot be collected at Nevada City Rotary TREX Recycling Program.
