Staying Connected March 10, 2022

Dear Rotarians and Friends,

Thursday March 10, Lunch Time 12:15pm
Kimberly Parker - SNMH Foundation and Hospital Update
This meeting will be IN PERSON HYBRID ZOOM

Rotary Connections

During this time when all of the world is watching the tragic events in Ukraine, my thoughts are drawn to how international our Rotary organization is. Yes, there is Rotary in Ukraine, and yes, there are Rotarians in Russia.

In Ukraine, Rotary is represented by 53 clubs in different cities of Ukraine and more than 1000 members. There are 9 clubs in Kyiv. Rotary Club Kyiv International opened on December 27, 2019, and has 30 members. Among members are entrepreneurs and investors, top executives, and public figures.

A Rotary Peace Square was designed by Kyiv Rotarians to promote Peace and was completed on March 28, 2021–one year before the current invasion. There was a grand opening attended by all the Rotary clubs based in Kyiv and the District Governor officiated. Tree planting continued throughout the Summer and Autumn. And now that city is in peril.

Rotary Peace Square in Kyiv

And yes, there are Rotarians in Russia—at least 127 Rotary Clubs in Russia and 1,200 members involved in community service like providing books for orphanages, playgrounds and equipment for disabled children, and support for hospices, according to my research.

Rotary Club Moscow International is the English-speaking Rotary Club in Russia's capital. When attending meetings, you will also hear Russian, German, French, and other languages spoken as the club welcomes Rotarians and visitors living nearby and visiting from around the world.

With Rotarians in Ukraine—including in Kyiv—and Rotarians in Russia— including Moscow— we can only hope and pray that better minds will prevail in this terrible situation that we Rotarians around the world are watching.

How you can support Ukrainians

In response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, The Rotary Foundation has created an official channel for Rotary members around the world to contribute funds to support the relief efforts underway by Rotary districts and has designated its Disaster Response Fund as the main avenue for contributions.

Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund in support of Ukraine can be made here. All funds need to be received into the Disaster Response Fund by 30 April 2022 in order to qualify for use in support of the Ukrainian relief efforts.

Make a special donation or your annual donation to the Disaster Response Fund, Polio Plus, or Annual Fund of The Rotary Foundation.

Club Returns to Hybrid as of March 3 - Special Zoom meeting February 21 5:00 - 6:00pm

Our Board has approved the return to in person/zoom Hybrid meetings as of Thursday, March 3.  Please understand that until the volatility of the pandemic has clearly diminished, we will continue to not serve food and drinks during the onsite hybrid meetings.

Our Bright Futures for Youth (BFFY) Partnership is Expanding

We are looking forward to partnering with 49er Breakfast Rotary to renovate buildings that will serve as Bright Futures for Youth's new NEO Youth Center. We have just submitted a $9,000 District grant application ($2,000/Club matched by $5,000 from the District). The center will offer after-school, occasional weekend activities, and other events for youth in western Nevada County.  The new center will also allow for the colocation and expansion of BFFY’s SAFE (Stability, Access, Foundation, Empowerment) program which provides critical services to homeless youth in our community.

We also have another opportunity to hand out Food Packets in February and March:

  • Monday, March 28* - Thursday March 31st.

In our meeting room in the Litton Building from 5:30-6:45pm.
*Monday, March 28 ONLY 3:45-4:45pm.

If you are interested in signing up for any of those slots please contact Nancy ASAP as these opportunities fill up quickly.
