Dear Rotarians and Friends,
Thursday March 24, Lunch 12:15pm
Aimee Retzler, Sierra Harvest: Good food is our passion.
This meeting will be Hybrid!!
A day for everything ... even chocolate raisins!
Following weeks of watching Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, our club’s Rotarians were very fortunate last week to have as our speaker John Hewko, General Secretary and C.E.O. of Rotary International. Thank you, Doug, for arranging this!
For those who were unable to zoom in to this very informative talk, we recorded it. If you want to view it, please contact Robin or Doug. And thank you to all Nevada City Rotarians who contributed their happy bucks and/or additional bucks to RI’s Disaster Relief Fund which goes to Rotarians in Ukraine and to surrounding countries who are aiding refugees arriving from Ukraine. Our $1,000 gift in John Hewko’s name is one thing we can do as we watch the awful news from far away.
But hopeful and beautiful things continue to happen on our planet: a full moon captured hours before the Spring Equinox. Daylight Savings which brings us more daylight at the end of the day. Warmer (too warm?) temperatures. AND. . . . Thursday, March 24 is National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day. Yes, there is a day for everything!
It’s also the day some of us will be meeting in person and others zooming in to hear about Sierra Harvest and what one person, Aimee Retzler, with a new idea and energy to follow it can achieve. Paul Harris started Rotary in February 1905–the vision of one man. It is good to remember what good one person can cause to happen!
Aimee, co-founded Sierra Harvest after she had lunch with her kindergartner at school and noticed how much food was going to waste leaving kids hungry. She was curious as to why a community that is surrounded by an abundance of agriculture, wasn’t feeding kids nutrient-dense, locally grown foods that were delivered in an educational way. Her passion for making sure kids get the best food possible is what fueled her to begin the farm-to-school program in Nevada County. She has guided the activities of Sierra Harvest since October 2008, building the organization from a grassroots community coalition to a viable nonprofit. One of her non-food passions is teaching Nia so consider yourself informed if she pulls out her first-degree black belt and starts dancing anywhere and everywhere.
