Returning to Zoom at least through September 23
Same ZOOM link works - watch this space for further updates!!!

Oh what a glorious day...

It’s a glorious day in Nevada City with much better air quality now that the smoke is starting to clear and while a bit warm today cooler days are just around the corner.  We had a very productive Board Meeting last night and I’m very pleased to report that all of our directors and their committees are staying active and making great plans to continue providing us with meaningful opportunities for involvement and contribution to our community and our planet.  Stay tuned as details and dates are released.

The committee that never sleeps consists of our speaker chairs, Chris and Nancy.  They make sure that great programs just keep coming.  Last week our RYLA graduate, Haruki (aka Keegan) Thompson, related some of his experiences at the camp and how inspiring the program has been to him and all of the attendees.  What a great program to support and be involved with and how very rewarding it is to hear back about the very positive impact that it has.

This week is movie night as we tune in to a fascinating video on the myriad of benefits of plant-based food.  Here’s a little promo:

What’s for Dinner? And Why does it Matter?

You may not be aware of this startling fact:  Industrialized animal agriculture is the world’s second-leading producer of human- caused methane emissions – 32% of the total, just behind the 35% generated by the fossil fuel industry.  Our program today features an informative video which explains how and why we can slow the production of these greenhouse gases by adopting a more plant-rich diet.  The International ESRAG organization has issued a 15-day Challenge to the Rotary community which begins October 1st.  We invite all our club members to sign up for this challenge at www.tinyurl.com/prdchallenge2021.  Please join us at our zoom meeting on September 16th  to find out more!

There is absolutely no pressure to become a vegetarian but why not cook up a nice bowl of plant based popped corn and tune in and enjoy the show.  I look forward to seeing you all at 5:30 PM, Thursday.

Around our Club and Community

Big hugs to Lynda as she heads home to continue her recovery!

Tanzania Toilets - What a difference a few $ can make

Timothy Massawe sent pictures of progress on the new Baruti school toilets!  Our donations this summer provided ample seed money for the Baruti community to start building new toilets!  With $3,000 they went from this...

To this... as you see, the foundation is laid and walls are rising. They need to double the original donations to complete the new toilets for their children.  Several Club members are contributing toward completing this project that will clearly change the quality of life for the young students.  If you want to contribute, please contact John Wilson this week or REPLY to this email and we will coordinate with you.

Many, many thanks.  Timothy Massawe has proved to be an active, diligent communicator both with this project and with John and Susie who adopted sweet Robson.

Food Bank of Nevada County

The Food Bank of Nevada County has a fundraising auction in progress, so any support is appreciated. Here's their link.  www.32auctions.com/harvestmoon2021 where you can bid on auction items, support a meal for a family, and make donations. The Food Bank had planned a live fundraising dinner that has been postponed.

D5190 Fire Relief

As we announced in our September 2 Rotario, District 5190, in conjunction with our respective clubs/partner organizations, has established ways for you to contribute to those affected by the many fires occurring within our district. The various Fire Relief Funds have a committee in each affected location to make decisions on disbursement of fire funds. The District is staffing a table at the Fire Relief Information Center in Chester for the Dixie fire and will present $500 gift cards. This is one of the ways the District is distributing $50,000 raised for the Dixie fire.

If you are interested in contributing, click the Fire Relief icon for more details. You can select a specific fire to which to donate funds via one of multiple options including the Rotary District 5190 Community Fund (a 501c3).   With the District Fund you have the option of designating a fire.

Nevada County Flu Clinic - We need more volunteers! Please sign up!

Nevada County Department of Public Health is again offering their drive thru Flu Shot Clinic on Tuesday October 5 on the Twin Cities parking lot.  Our club is planning to provide support staffing to create the Flu Clinic information packets and to direct traffic.  Masked warriors is again donating free masks that we will include in the packets!

Please let Susie Monary-Wilson know (or reply to this email) if you are available to volunteer.  If you did not volunteer last year, you will need to register with CA Department of Healthcare Volunteers. If you registered last year, you do not need to re-register.  NC Health is requiring volunteers to be vaccinated.

We need volunteers from 9am-5pm (or earlier if they run out of shots). If you can participate the whole day please do! Morning setup includes stuffing the information packets as well as marking the drivethru lanes with safety cones, etc.  We expect lunch to be served around 11am and the clinic to open at noon.

Volunteers may get vaccinated in the morning.  The vaccination is a regular flu shot not the high dose  "senior" vaccine.

We had a great time working together with the County Health team last year and they were very appreciative of our partnership!  We hope you will join us if you are available to do so.

Your Dues and Happy/Sad Shares make a difference!

Check your email (maybe even your "junk" folder) for your latest invoices -- Treasurer John Wilson has completed his due diligence on our behalf once again. Your Happy/Sad shares give us glimpses of what is going on in your life beyond Rotary.  They are special moments together especially since so much of our time is on Zoom.  Your associated "bucks" provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond.  Thanks for sharing you and for following the Four Way Test with your Happy Buck pledges to our Club!

Stay connected and informed
