Launching the New Year with Co-Presidents Tom Ryan and Dave Denney

I am looking forward with great expectations to our first meeting Thursday, July 1, at the Litton Building and our 5:30 social. Since I’ve been on the road since the incredible festivities of the Demotion Party as we celebrated President Tom M’s fabulous year along with the triumphs and many awards won by our club, it feels like I’ve been out of touch.

The reality is that while speeding down Interstate 5 on my way to Los Angeles Friday morning I got a phone call that the last of our six acceptances for our Global Scholarship Grant came through. I was able to pull off the road at the next available Star Bucks, make use of their WiFi, complete the application and get back on the road. Just 45 minutes later another phone call confirmed that RI had approved Evani’s grant application and we have our first ever RI Global Grant Scholar approved for nine month’s of research in Oxford, England.

Saturday brought the happy news from John W. that Mt. St. Mary’s Academy with Karen's participation has selected a block of students to fill out our sponsorship for the REGL program. Their REGL application should be finalized on Monday.

Monday I’ll be headed north on I 5 with my grandson Jack from Costa Rica for a five week visit. Cathy is probably meeting with the Food Committee coming up with scrumptious yummies for our social. PP and Tech Guru Tom M will be meeting with Charlie Litton to get instructions on operating the state of the art audio video equipment that will produce our very first hybrid meeting and our first meeting of the year. Robin has turned out a special edition Rotario. She is now preparing this one and Co-President Dave has sent in his message.

The reality is that while I’m on the road and it feels like I’m out of touch, the fact is that we’re all in touch all of the time. Last year never ended and this year has already begun. The confidence that I have in all of our abilities to keep this wheel turning is a source of great comfort. Thanks to all for making us the great club that we are and for the support and energy that you provide to keep us strong.

Don’t forget to bring the beverage of your choice to Thursday’s social and we’ll all raise a glass to keeping the circle unbroken.

Please note, The Board is still sorting through logistics and related food costs with our new venue.  At least until our July Board Meeting, we are holding meeting fees at $10 for social and $14 for lunch.

Co-Pres Dave

Gayle and I are pleased that we could be a part of last week’s demotion. It was great to see everyone in person, and we really look forward to our club members being able to be together, rather than mostly seeing each other on our screens.

2021-2022 is going to be a fantastic year for the Nevada City Rotary Club! We have an excellent new board, many of whom are stepping up to new positions.  Board members are now actively filling their committees, and I encourage you to consider serving on one of these. Many of us who are directors will also be helping on these new committees. For example, I will be on Dennis Geare’s Membership Committee. I think the goal of “Everyone Bring One” will be one good way to increase our club’s membership. Especially after this long time when everyone was stuck at home,  we can take advantage of new energy and new talent that new members will bring.

I look forward with enthusiasm to being a co-president with Tom Ryan this year. Let’s have fun being of service!

Your Dues and Happy/Sad Shares make a difference!

With the new Rotary year, annual dues become due as of July 1.  Everyone should have received your dues invoice via email. If not, let us know! If you have questions about your invoices, Tom R and John Wilson are happy to discuss your statement with you. Thank you Club members for following the Four Way Test with your Happy Buck and dues pledges to our Club!

Your Happy/Sad shares give us glimpses of what is going on in your life beyond Rotary.  They are special moments together especially since so much of our time is on Zoom.  Your associated "bucks" provide a base for us to continue our special services to our community and beyond.  Thanks for sharing you and for following the Four Way Test with your Happy Buck and dues pledges to our Club!
