Holidays are ON!
It seems as though the holidays are definitely on. The Thanksgiving bird has come and gone. Christmas shopping is in high gear. Victorian Christmas is happening on Broad Street and decorations are popping up all over town. Hanukkah has just ended!
If you’re thinking that with all of this excitement and activity going on that there just couldn’t be time for anything else you would be wrong. Here at Nevada City Rotary in the last week we have planted trees at Woolman Farm, bulbs at Penzance Park, daily collection of soft plastic for recycle, vaccinations going on at the time of this writing and at least three committee meetings that I know of to plot and plan more and more. Money for the Healthy Water Project in Los Barriles is pouring in and we have pledges that exceed the $7500 goal and most of it is in the bank. Good job Carolyn and District 5190.

With all of this activity and holiday cheer in the air, we need a party! And that is exactly why we are gathering at the Litton Building at 5:30 PM this Thursday evening for our annual Holiday Party. As you probably know, we are doing a BYOB pot luck dinner along with the other festivities planned by our very own holiday elves, Cathy and Judy. If you forgot what you are offering to the pot luck, check in with them as they have the list and will be checking it twice. So put on your best Christmas finery and don’t be late. Join us as we celebrate with food, song, games and the joy of each other’s company. In case you just realized that you don’t want to miss out on this but haven’t signed up, please RSVP with either Cathy or Judy right now and let them know.
Los Barriles, Mexico awaits us again for the Healthy Water Project
Our work project with our partner club, the Los Barriles Cabo de Este Rotary Club, will take place from Feb. 17-19, with travel & recreation days before and after. What’s new this year is to devote our time, energy and learning to two projects: The Healthy Water Project and health screening for school kids.
For more details and the District registration form, we created a page on our website. Go to our NCRotary.org site and visit D5190 2022 Clean Water Project under International in the left sidebar. Please contact Carolyn Feuille with your questions: cfeuille@gmail.com and phone 650-867-4564.
Rotary Climate Action Team Network COP26 Review - After Glasgow: Where are we now?
After diplomats, scientists, lobbyists, activists, artists, the media, politicians and business people gathered in Glasgow for COP26, it might be easy to dismiss the entire affair. That would be a mistake. The UNFCC and its COPs, for all their flaws, play a crucial part in a process that is historic and vital: the removal of the fundamental limit on humanity flourishing as a result of our dependence on fossil fuels.
To understand the results and issues, we turn to experts who were there or tracked the output of Glasgow closely. On December 16 RCAT Network Global Forum has a three-person panel focused on Glasgow. As we approach the rest of the 2020s, we all need to understand the commitments countries made at COP26 so that we can hold them to their promises.
The panel will include: Karen Kendrick-Hands (ESRAG), Elizabeth Bagley (SEI) and Rick Wayman (Fdn for Climate Restoration). The moderator for this event will be Gary White (Climate Reality Project).
